Extractions: AN A. FRANCE DUO The Rise Zenith of PENGUINIAN Civilization France, Anatole . Penguin island. New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1947. Small folio. [1 (blank)] p., [1 (blank)] f., [3 (2 blank)], frontis., [6 (1 blank)], xixvi, [2 (1 blank)], 3324, [2 (1 blank)] pp., [2 (blank)] ff., [1 (blank)] p.; 10 plts. In his lifetime, Anatole France (18441924) was considered one of the greatest writers of all time, on a par with Dante, Shakespeare, and Victor Hugo. With his death, however, his reputation has declined, his charm and gentle wit being out of step with the hard-edged tastes of the 20th century. Carl van Doren writes in his introduction that the reader unfamiliar with France's writings should start with Penguin Island The frosty-looking binding is quarter white calfskin (penguin skin probably not being obtainable), gold-stamped on the spine with the title and a penguin design; the light blue silk sides are decorated with a white "penguin pattern" by illustrator Malcolm Cameron. Cameron created the 11 full-page black-and-white pencil drawings and the drawings on each of the eight book-opening pages; he has also signed the colophon. Designer Joseph Blumenthal chose a monotype Emerson font, and added a series of decorations in blue ink to accompany the chapter titles. All edges are stained the light blue of the covers. This edition, limited to 1500 copies, is translated by A.W. Evans and carries a preface by the author.
