Extractions: KANSAS COLLECTION BOOKS William G. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas During October, 1854, two Kansas Free-state newspapers were established. John and J. L. Speer, the pioneer editors and publishers of Lawrence, arrived in that place, September 29, 1854. Mr. John Speer prepared the copy for the first number of his paper, which was to be called the Kansas Pioneer and took it to the office of the Kansas City Enterprise (Judge Story) to have it printed, according to previous arrangement. On finding it a pronounced Free-state paper, Mr. Story refused to print it, and Mr. Speer then took his copy to the office of the Leavenworth Herald , where he met with a similar experience. He then returned to his old home at Medina, Ohio and issued his paper dated October 15, 1854, from that place, under the name he had selected. Following are a few extracts from the paper: "LAND FOR THE LANDLESS The general interests of the pioneer - the industrious, frugal and honest emigrant who seeks here a home for his family - shall not be neglected. Our aim shall be to advocate and urge such treaties with the Indians as shall bring the lands of the Territory within the reach of the poor as well as the rich; laboring to create a public sentiment which shall demand of the General government such a disposition of the public domain as shall open it to the free occupation of actual settlers in preference to favoritism to speculators. the true interests of the Territory, its speedy settlement, its general intelligence, all demand that its soil shall be subject to occupancy by the now landless and homeless freemen of the entire Union.

Extractions: Riley, Mrs. Emily Meade. Douglas: 1881 I was born September 8, 1870, near old Ft. Ridgely not far from the present city of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, which was named in honor of the Indian "Sleepy Eye" friend of the white people. One of a family of six children whose mother was called by death as early as 1875 each of us soon learned the lesson of self-reliance. In 1881, my father sold the last 80 acres of his preemption, on which there was a $200 mortgage for $1,000. He turned most of the balance of the $1,000 into stock. Good cows were purchased as low as $15 each. This was before the heavy range loss of 1880 and 1881 was known to the public. Come with me now and see two canvas covered wagons drawn by ox teams plodding along at the rate of 20 miles per day, followed by 35 head of cattle bound for Atkinson, Nebraska, which we never reached. The heavy snows of 1880 and 1881 reduced to water by chinook winds left mud holes a plenty. After reaching the little town of Lamberton, Minnesota, the road became only a trail. Here we camped our first night out. Rain had set in. We took refuge in a one-room abandoned cabin partly filled with corn but it afforded a better shelter than canvas. For cooking we used a hay burning sheet iron camp stove. Bacon and eggs, homemade bread with an abundance of milk for the children and hot coffee was the menu for the first few days out. Bakeries were unknown. Crackers were often substituted for bread. These were purchased in wooden boxes of bushel capacity.

Extractions: JSR 68:6 As the thoughtful evaluation of manuscripts by experts in the field, peer reviews are the cornerstone of the Journal. The Reviewers read the manuscripts (usually several times) and convey their resulting opinions to the authors in writing.. Reviews take time and energy and are done in the office, at home, in airports, and, commonly, in doctors waiting rooms. Reviewing is often a challenge and may require very difficult decisions. Untangling grammar and helping some authors with the wonders of English require much patience. But, the process often brings its own rewards, involving the excitement of new ideas and new discoveries. The following list includes all reviewers who contributed their efforts to the Journal during the last year and helped to shape the six issues of Volume 68. A hearty thanks you to you all. Extractions: The 161 Basic Books for an Abraham Lincoln Library The Lincoln collector, confronted with approximately 10,000 books and pamphlets relating to Abraham Lincoln, must wonder if he has tackled too vast a subject. No other historical personage, excepting Napoleon, has been studied and written about as much as our 16th President. And the list of Lincoln publications continues to grow at a steady pace. We have always felt the collector should have an attainable goal; that is, a selective list of books which would offer what is considered to be the most authoritative and best written works on the subject. But the myriad of choices presents a profound problem for serious readers and collectors. Where does one begin assembling a basic Lincoln library? To address this problem, we offer the following list of 161 titles pertaining to Lincoln's life and times. [For those who ask, we chose 161 because that is what number the essential list came to.] We don't expect everyone to agree with our choices, but this list does represent the consensus of leading authorities in the field of Lincoln scholarship. But we accept responsibility for the final choice. This list has not been prepared in catalogue form. Therefore, we simply list each title, indicating the major editions for both scholarship and collecting. We list the first trade edition only if there are no major additions in subsequent (if any) editions. If there is a reprint with added material, or a limited edition of note, we will list the first edition after (a) and other significant editions after (b), (c), etc.

She was both vulnerable and powerful, as one of the worlds most famous screen babes. Her fame was both her greatest achievement and her ruin. The greatest shame is that the world didnt get to understand and appreciate this extraordinary womans impressive mind... her love of art, of children and animals... her humanity. In her own words... "There was my name up in lights. I said 'God, somebody's made a mistake. But there is was, in lights. And I sat there and said, 'Remember, you're not a star'. Yet there it was up in lights." "An actor is supposed to be a sensitive instrument. Isaac Stern takes good care of his violin. What if everybody jumped on his violin?" "It stirs up envy, fame does. People...feel fame gives them some kind of privilege to walk up to you and say anything to you -and it won't hurt your feelings -like it's happening to your clothing." "With fame, you know, you can read about yourself, somebody else's ideas about you, but what's important is how you feel about yourself -for survival and living day to day with what comes up."

Roberto - 03/21/03 Hola Roberto - Lo sentimos.
