Coming in second to Grover Cleveland in the popular vote, he won in the Electoral College and was pronounced the twenty-third President.

In colonial Virginia five successive generations of Benjamin Harrisons (1632-1791) compiled almost identical records as gentlemen of education and wealth, burgesses, councillors, and militia colonels. Fearless independence, a strong sense of justice, and high intelligence marked Harrison as a soldier, lawyer, humanitarian, and statesman-president. The new bride eventually reared nine children.

Benjamin Harrison was the 23rd President of the United States from 1889 to 1893. He was President 100 years after George Washington, which made him the Centennial President. The Harrison Home houses some 3,700 artifacts and 2,440 books. About 75% of the artifacts in the home actually belonged to the Harrison's. In the home the visitors see ten of the rooms with period furnishings and Harrison items. The third floor, originally a ball room, houses exhibits. A new exhibit opens every six months with Harrison Home artifacts and borrowed artifacts. Textiles, dresses, and other artifacts are displayed through out the house. So often, when one thinks of politicians, one thinks of lawyers. While it is true that many politicians happen to be lawyers by trade, nowhere is it more evident than in the occupation of the Presidency. Twenty-six have held the occupation of lawyer. Amongst those gentlemen are some rather distinguished names such as Founding Fathers Adams, Jefferson and Madison, Supreme Court Justice Taft, and Franklin Roosevelt.     Extractions: Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901) Occupations: From 1854-1856, Harrison was in a legal partnership with William Wallace. In 1857, Harrison acted as the Indianapolis city attorney. He was the secretary of the Republican state central committee from 1858-1860. Harrison was the supreme court reporter of Indiana from 1861-1862. He served in the Civil War for the Union, in the 70th Indiana Infantry Regiment, from July 1862 - June 1865, rising from the rank of second lieutenant to brigadier general. After the war he resumed his post as supreme court reporter of Indiana, and he resumed law practice with Albert G. Porter and William P. Fishback (who was later replaced by Cyrus C. Hines). In 1871, he was appointed by President Grant as defense counsel for army personal being sued for civil damages by Lambdin P. Milligan.

He was the son of a Whig Congressman and the grandson of former president William Henry Harrison . In 1854, Harrison graduated with honors from Miami University of Ohio and briefly considered entering the ministry, but chose instead to study law in Cincinnati. He later opened a practice in Indianapolis where he hoped also to launch a political career. Breaking with his father's old line political ties, Harrison joined the new Republican Party and worked on behalf of John C. Frémont in 1856 and Abraham Lincoln in 1860. Harrison commanded Indiana volunteers in the Civil War and was promoted to brigadier general following his heroic leadership in the Atlanta campaign . He took a furlough during 1864 to campaign for pro-Union candidates in Indiana, a fairly common practice during that era. Following the war, Harrison returned to the law and frequently spoke out on current political topics, notably his support for the Radical Republican Reconstruction plan . In 1876, he ran for governor of Indiana and lost. In 1881, he was elected to the U.S. Senate by the state legislature; he was noted for his ardent support of Civil War
