As an apprentice to the editor of the Countryman, a newspaper published on a Southern plantation, Harris gained firsthand knowledge of black slaves and their folklore. His stories and sketches of the South were originally published in the Atlanta Constitution, with which he was associated from 1876 to 1900. Harris's first collection, Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings (1881), brought him immediate fame. Featuring as their narrator a lovable, shrewd former slave, the Uncle Remus stories drew upon African-American folklore and humor and captured the authentic life, character, and dialect of Southern blacks. The demand for his stories and sketches was so great that Harris followed with nine more books in a similar vein, including The Tar Baby (1904) and Uncle Remus and Br'er Rabbit (1906).     Extractions: In the late 1850's Joel Chandler Harris saw the ad in the newspaper. "Boy wanted to learn the printer's trade." Anyone with a job has a chance. He saw this as his chance to better his life and the life of his mother. His father had deserted the family years ago, leaving his mother to live in a house provided by a friend and take in sewing for income. Young Joel went to work for Mr. Joseph Addison Turner who published The Countryman on his plantation near Eatonton, Georgia. The job provided Joel with a trade and an education beyond agriculture. He was allowed to use Mr. Turner's large library where he learned to love literature. This was his opportunity, but he was still lonely and dearly missed his mother. At night he would wander among the row of slave cabins and share a supper of baked yams and hoe-cake. What drew him was not the food, but the friendship of two older slaves Old Harbert and Uncle George Terrell. He would listen to their African tales of animals personified in the rich dialect and humble wisdom of the slaves. At the end of the Civil War everything changed. The Countryman was closed by the occupying Northern troops. Joel left and worked at a series of newspapers until The Atlanta Constitution allowed him the opportunity to write.

Most famous for his creation of the black folk figure Uncle Remus, Joel Chandler Harris was also a journalist, humorist, and novelist. Born in rural Georgia to a single mother, Harris suffered poverty and social ostracism in his childhood. Many of his biographers suggest that his early insecurities led to lifelong shyness, which he compensated for by writing humorous stories and playing practical jokes. At thirteen, Harris was taken on as an apprentice typesetter at The Countryman , a weekly newspaper run by Joseph Addison Turner on his large plantation, called Turnwold. There, Harris received training in printing as well as what he later termed "a liberal education," enjoying the benefits of the extensive Turnwold library and receiving informal instruction from Turner. He also spent a great deal of time learning from the slaves on the Turnwold plantation, absorbing their stories, songs, and myths. Later, Harris drew on these experiences to compose his sketches and stories of African American life.
