Uma tragédia em cinco atos, com implicações gregas, da qual o próprio Wilde era o mais ardente espectador". Oscar Fingall O'Flahertie Wills Wilde nasceu em Dublin, na Irlanda, em 15 de outubro de 1856. Era o segundo filho do Dr. William Wilde (1799-1869), um médico de reputação brilhante, especialista em olhos e ouvidos. A mãe de oscar era jane Francisca Speranza Elgee (1826-1896) que, durante muitos anos, animou o mais famoso salão literário de Dublin. Em 1864, Jane publicou um volume de poemas sob o pseudônimo de "Speranza", seguindo-se numerosos outros trabalhos sob o seu próprio nome. Ela também tinha grande interesse pela política, tendo escrito artigos e manifestos para The Nation, o jornal do partido "Jobem Irlanda". Já no primeiro ato da tragédia de que fala Frank Harris, há indícios do gênio pervertido e dispersivo de Oscar Wilde. Quando ele tinha dez anos, juntou-se ao seu irmão na Portora Royal School, e logo ficou evidente que os seus gostos e hábitos diferiam dos outros meninos. Oscar amava a solidão, detestava todas as formas de exercício físico, e refugiava-se dos aspectos menos interessantes dos estudos lendo poesia e os clássicos gregos. Nem por isso o seu curso foi prejudicado, pelo contrário, ao longo de toda a sua carreira acadêmicaos seus amigos nunca deixaram de proclamar que Wilde, embora nunca parecesse estudar a sério, obtinha sempre distinção em todas as matérias.
