Extractions: A military interest in aviation was stirred in 1909 when the Aerial League of Australia, through its founder, G. A. Taylor, who had worked with Hargrave on the development of the engine submitted to the Minister for Defence, Mr Joseph Cook, that aircraft could play a part in defending Australia and that a Government sponsored design competition would help to stimulate the interest of inventors. Technical and military advisers supported the idea and a prize of £25,000 was duly offered, provided a similar sum was subscribed by the public, or by industry. Despite lack of financial response the Government persisted in laying down competition rules requiring the inventor to demonstrate that his machine could rise from the ground carrying a pilot and observer, stay aloft for five hours and return to the ground without damaging its landing gear. Its speed had to be greater than 25 miles per hour. Many submissions were received from within Australia and from overseas; the difficulty was that, without finance, machines could not be built for demonstration and the entrants needed the prize money to finance their effort. The competition was finally cancelled.

Extractions: Born at Greenwich, England, in 1850, the second son of John Fletcher Hargrave and Ann, nee Hargrave, Lawrence was educated at Queen Elizabeth's School at Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmoreland. At the age of 15 he sailed to Australia in the La Hogue to join his father, who had moved, to New South Wales in 1866 to pursue a legal career. Following the death of his father Lawrence inherited a considerable landholding on the south coast of New South Wales which gave him a sizeable income. He resigned from the observatory to concentrate on his scientific experiments into animal motion as a means of ship propulsion. This led him to consider the nature of locomotion through air in the pursuit of the proof of his 'trochoided plane' theory. He built a number of ornithopters which were tested from the veranda of his Sydney house. These early ornithopters were powered by rubber bands but he realised that greater and more sustained power was required for a man-powered flying machine to succeed. He began experiments to develop a successful aeronautical engine. In his search he discovered the rotary radial principle and built a model engine to prove its value.

He went to the US in 1927 and opened an aerial navigation school in Los Angeles. He worked with Philip Weems to develop the Weems Navigation System and prepared route maps for aviators like Art Goebel and Wiley Post. In 1929, he flew as navigator with Roscoe Turner to establish a new trans-continental record for a commercial aircraft. In 1930, at Charles Lindbergh's request, he taught Anne Morrow Lindbergh how to navigate. The Lindberghs subsequently used some of his navigational instruments on their North Atlantic survey flight in 1933. In 1930, he ( on left of photo) flew with Harold Bromley ( on right of photo) in a failed attempt to fly the North Pacific non-stop,and had to turn back due to fumes and mechanical faults ! However in 1931 he flew with Wiley Post in the Winnie Mae flight. (' Round the World in 8 Days' by Post and Gatty). He turned down two offers to fly in the MacRobertson Centenary Flight in 1935 to go to New Zealand to establish the South Pacific air route for Pan Am. At the same time, as representative for Donald Douglas, he succeeded in itroducing the first American commercial aircraft into Australia.

Pilots & Chauffeurs John J. Montgomery of California builds a monoplane glider Lawrence Hargrave, Australia, invents the box kite 1894 Hargraves.jpg (159629 bytes) Hargraves with a http://www.first-to-fly.com/History/History of Airplane/pilots.htm
Extractions: WRIGHT BROTHERS Aeroplane Company 1880 to 1898 Otto Lilientha l , Germany, begins to test cambered wing surfaces and measures their lifting capability. Louis Moulliard , France, writes another milestone in aeronautics, Empire of the Air , in which he proposes fixed-wing gliders with cambered wings, like birds. He also proposes that aviators practice in gliders to gain the skill needed to pilot an aircraft in the air. Up until that time, everyone in the infant field of aviation presumed you could navigate the sky with no more skill than a chauffer . It split the field into two camps, each with a different approach to making a practical aircraft. The chauffeurs focus on engineering, making a powered flying machine. The pilots practice with gliders to gain skill before attempting powered flight. John J. Montgomery of California builds a monoplane glider and makes the first gliding flight in America. The glider crashes and is destroyed at the end of its maiden flight, and Montgomery barely escapes with his life. Charles Parsons , England, inventor of the turbine motor, tests a small 1/4 horsepower steam turbine engine in a model airplane, propelling it for approximately 300 feet. Although Parsons experiments had little effect on the development of aviation, some consider this to be the first jet aircraft.
