Extractions: Historical Note Settlement of the area known as the West Garfield Park community was stimulated in the late 1800s by the extension of transportation and municipal services to the area. The building of railroad manufacturing shops by the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad (later the Chicago and North Western) in 1873 brought two thousand Scandinavian, Irish and German workers who settled to the west in what was then called Central Park. In 1878, the St. Mel parish was established at Keeler Avenue and Maypole Street. A number of other churches soon appeared, although until the 1900s only scattered and limited commercial and residential activity took place around the settlement. Early in 1889, as the western and southern portions of the community area were annexed to the city, Garfield Park became a major recreational area, stimulating settlement in the East Garfield Park community area. By 1920, more than 40,000 people lived in West Garfield Park. They were mainly first- and second-generation Irish and some Russian Jews. By 1930 population reached 50, 000, with more Russian Jews and some Italians moving in from farther east. Construction virtually ceased in 1930 with the onset of the Depression, and in the decades that followed population dropped considerably. The 1950s saw a substantial shift in the communities ethnic and racial composition, as African-Americans moved into the southeast region of the area and increasing numbers of Italians and Mexicans moved into the area.

It does however give some interesting information on life in the Shetland Islands during the 19th century. Here is a wee extract from it... Sittings for the purpose of taking evidence were held at Lerwick, Brae (Delting), Hillswick (Northmaven), Mid Yell, Balta Sound (Unst), Boddam (Dunrossness), and Scalloway, in Shetland. I visited Kirkwall, in Orkney, for the purpose of examining certain witnesses now residing there with regard to the condition of Fair Island, which was inaccessible at the time of my journey. Sittings were also held in Edinburgh for the examination of a few witnesses residing there. Public notice by printed bills was given of all meetings, and circulars were also sent to all clergymen, schoolmasters, and landed proprietors, and to all persons in the fishcuring and hosiery trades. Evidence was received from almost all who tendered it, from a large number of persons suggested or put forward by employers of labour and purchasers of hosiery goods and fish, and from many witnesses who were selected and cited. Extractions: Submitted by Vernon Cook This regiment was organized and mustered for nine months' service in the latter part of August, 1862. James R. Porter, of Indiana County, was appointed colonel, and the staff officers partly from the three Indiana county companies A. D, and I, commanded by Captains Samuel T. Nicholson, John G. Wilson and John A. Kinter. The regiment was composed of excellent men, and with the patriotic spirit evidenced, no doubt desired to make a more effective record, but General Wadsworth, upon its arrival at Washington, assigned it to duty in detachments as provost guard, prison guard and kindred duties, till April, 1863, when it joined the forces on the Rappahnnock near Fredericksburg, and was assigned to duty with first brigade, third division, first army corps. April 29, 1863, the regiment had an introduction to genuine warfare in a sort of long range duel with sharpshooters on the opposite bank of the Rappahannock; by a brisk fire, preventing them from picking off our gunners at the batteries in position near the river. During the day the regiment lost some wounded. It remained in support of the batteries until ordered to join Hooker's force at Chancellorsville, where it participated losing a few men prisoners when on duty as skirmishers in front of its brigade, but did not become engaged. This regiment did all duty required of it at anytime, and many men afterwards served in the hard fought battles of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania C. H.. Cold Harbor and Petersburg, in all of which some of the above named regiments were hotly engaged. Quite a number of crippled and disabled ones can refer to the 135th regiment as the preparatory school through which they passed. [History of Indiana Co., Pennsylvania 1745-1880 page 282].
