    Extractions: Born Hiram Ulysses Grant in Point Pleasant, Ohio, the future military hero grew up in neighboring Georgetown. He worked on the family farm and became skilled with handling horses. An appointment to West Point was secured through his father’s efforts, despite Grant’s lack of interest in a military career. He graduated in 1843 in the bottom half of his class, having impressed few due to his unmilitary bearing, but enjoying success with mathematics and horsemanship. His early tastes ran heavily toward novels and art. His first military experience was gained in the Mexican War (1846-1848). He initially served with the quartermaster corps where he gained a lasting understanding of supply issues, but later saw action. Grant would look back on the American military activities in Mexico with contempt. In 1852, Grant was assigned to Fort Vancouver in the Oregon Territory and later to Fort Humboldt in northern California. The climate's dreariness and separation from his wife and sons apparently led Grant to a dependence on alcohol , an issue that led to his resignation from the service in 1854.

Born on April 27th, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio, Hiram Ulysses Grant Grant's West Point instructors and peers often criticized his sloppiness and perpetual slouch and lack of graces which some speculated was deliberate, as Grant maintained that he was enrolled against his will. Grant showed small interest in any of the military academy curriculum other than mathematics and horsemanship, and graduated solidly in the lower half of his class in 1843, admitting his greatest accomplishments for his 4 years were growing more than 6 inches and reading many good books.     Extractions: In the spring of 1861, Ulysses Grant hardly seemed destined for greatness. Having resigned his army captain's commission in 1854, this West Point graduate was eking out a living as a clerk in his brother's leather shop. But the Civil War marked a dramatic shift in his fortune. Reenlisting in the army, he was soon made a general. By war's end, he was commander of all Union land forces, and as the chief architect of the South's defeat, he had become one of the country's most admired heroes. Grant's popularity inevitably led to his election to the presidency in 1868. But here he proved less successful, and his weak control over his administration spawned an outbreak of federal corruption that made "Grantism" synonymous with public graft. Nevertheless, Grant's personal charisma waned but little through his two terms. Had he succumbed to talk of running for a third, he perhaps would have won. Grant posed for this portrait shortly after he returned from a triumphant world tour following his presidency. The largely self-taught artist Thomas LeClear painted two versions. This one was originally owned by Grant himself, while the second one became part of the White House collection.

His success and fame as a general led to his election as president in 1868. During his military career, Grant led his troops with energy and determination. He developed great confidence in his own judgment, and an ability to learn from experience. These traits also characterized Grant's political career. But the qualities that had brought him military glory were not enough to solve the nation's problems in the 1870's. Grant's enemies called him a poor president. Historians have generally agreed. Grant was the first West Point graduate to become president. A quiet, unassuming man, he had an almost shy manner and did not look like a leader. Grant's presidency was clouded by disgrace and dishonesty. Congressional investigations revealed widespread corruption in both state and local governments. Grant was slow to realize that some persons who pretended to be his friends could not be trusted. Several of his major appointees became involved in scandals. But Grant himself was so honest that few historians believe he could have been involved personally. Grant remembered that black soldiers had fought to defend the Union. He tried to protect the rights of former slaves to vote, hold property, and have other privileges of citizenship. He also sought to correct injustices suffered by American Indians. But Grant lacked the political skills to achieve these goals of justice and reform.

In 1848 he married Julia Dent and looked ahead to a life of routine in the regular army. But Grant failed miserably as a peacetime soldier. Bored, lonely, and increasingly addicted to drink, he resigned under pressure in 1854. Grant fared little better in civil life. He moved from job to job, at one point selling firewood in the streets of St. Louis. In 1860, with nowhere else to turn, he went to work as a clerk in his brother's dry goods store in Galena, Illinois. The 1864 battles cost the Army of the Potomac 66,000 casualties between May4 and June 19half the army's strength at the outset of the campaignbut Grant refused to turn away from his goal. With simplicity and directness of purpose, he pursued his strategy to the end: destruction of the Confederate armies, one by one. Grant's two presidential terms were marred by scandal and corruption on a grand scale. No one ever suggested Grant himself had stolen while in office; in fact, he left the White House with a modest net worth of only a few thousand dollars. But he knew one final triumphthe completion, just before his death on July 23, 1885, of his Personal Memoirs, a best-seller in its time and an enduring classic of Civil War literature.

IN view of the known character of the speaker who is to address you to-day, and his long public career, and association with the leading statesmen of this country for the past twenty years, it would not be becoming in me to detain you with many remarks of my own. But it may be proper for me to account to you on the first occasion of my presiding at political meetings for the faith that is in me. I am a Republican, as the two great political parties are now divided, because the Republican party is a national party seeking the greatest good for the greatest number of citizens. There is not a precinct in this vast nation where a Democrat can not cast his ballot and have it counted as cast. No matter what the prominence of the opposite party, he can proclaim his political opinions, even if he is only one among a thousand, without fear and without proscription on account of his opinions. There are fourteen States, and localities in some other States, where Republicans have not this privilege. This is one reason why I am a Republican. But I am a Republican for many other reasons. The Republican party assures protection to life and property, the public credit, and the payment of the debts of the government, State, county, or municipality, so far as it can control. The Democratic party does no promise this; if it does, it has broken its promises to the extent of hundreds of millions, as many Northern Democrats can testify to their sorrow. I am a Republican, as between the existing parties, because it fosters the production of the field and farm, and of manufactories, and it encourages the general education of the poor as well as the rich.
