Extractions: Walter Bates, a Loyalist who emigrated to Nova Scotia - the part which became New Brunswick - was high sheriff of Kings County. The recipe for a bestseller was there: the type of thief one would have enjoyed meeting, and the writing ability of Bates. First published in New Haven (Connecticut) and London (England) in 1817, this work was reprinted until 1910 and sold thousands of copies. Adam Kidd claimed he had sold 1500 copies by subscription, quite a feat for the times. This copy bears the following inscriptions: "Theodosia Dunbar her book the gift of Mr. Robert Stuart" and "Miss. E. McDonell - In memory of me - J.M." These inscriptions connect the copy with the fur trade since Robert Stuart was a member of the Pacific Fur Company, and John McDonell (1768-1850) was a member of the North West Company and lived near Ottawa in Prescott and Pointe-Fortune.
308-311 Ralph Connor Novelist With Muscular Spirit 18601937 Charles William Gordon, penname Ralph Connor, clergyman and author, was perhaps the most successful http://collections.ic.gc.ca/heirloom_series/volume5/308-311.htm
Extractions: Novelist With Muscular Spirit 1860-1937 Charles William Gordon, pen name Ralph Connor, clergyman and author, was perhaps the most successful Canadian novelist of the early twentieth century. Western missionary, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, statesman of Church Union, army chaplain, diplomat, labour conciliator, and popular writer at the height of his career he was arguably the best-known living Canadian and his name was a household word throughout the English-speaking world. As the prolific author of 24 novels, three separately issued extracts, three shorter tales, five religious pamphlets, one biography of his mentor and missionary superintendent, the Rev. James Robertson, and his unfinished autobiography, Postscript to Adventure, Connor ranks with Stephen Leacock, Mazo de la Roche, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Marshall Saunders, and Robert Service as the best-selling authors of Canadas first century. Charles W. Gordon was born in the Presbyterian manse at St. Elmo, Glengarry County, Canada West on September 13, 1860, the son of the fiery Rev. Daniel Gordon, Free Kirk minister in the Indian Lands, and the equally saintly Mary Robertson, a graduate of Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. Charles was named after one of his fathers most faithful supporters, Charles McDonald, for 68 years an elder of the Indian Lands Church, a man of clear intellect and staunch integrity.

Extractions: Discoverers and doctors have a special place in a roll of honour because they have contributed to the well-being or comfort of millions. The work of Sir Sandford Fleming (1827-1915), inventor, scientist, surveyor and engineer, for instance, still affects us. A Scot by birth, he came to Canada in 1845 and was chief engineer of the Intercolonial Railway that linked Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. From 1871 he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway, surveying its arduous route through the Rockies. But his greatest achievement was the establishment of the system of international standard time in 1884. Another Scottish immigrant brought the province even greater fame. While living at Brantford during the years 1874 to 1876, Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922) invented the telephone and inaugurated a new era of communications for the world. Bell was also a pioneer speech therapist for the deaf. He moved to the United States but returned in 1890 to live in Nova Scotia. There at Baddeck he devoted the rest of his life to research. His Aerial Experiment Association led to the first manned flight in Canada in 1909. Sir William Osler, Bt., (1849-1919) was a native of Bond Head, Ontario. His medical education at Trinity and McGill was completed in London, Berlin and Vienna. Chosen first Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University in 1889, Osler became Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford in 1905. Medical education and the treatment of patients in hospitals were radically altered by his ideas which he expressed in his book The Principles and Practice of Medicine. A vigorous, humane doctor and a noted diagnostician, he was also an important philanthropist. King George V created him a Baronet in 1911.
