If we are brothers, how can we justify the ownership of some by others? Nothing captured this idea more powerfully than the image first cast by Josiah Wedgwood in 1787. In it, a manacled African asks the question: "Am I not a man and a brother?" Even today, Wedgwood's image resonates. In the movie, The Brother from Another Planet, last column, we pointed out that religion was not the only ground for claims of universal brotherhood. We noted that Thomas Carlyle coined the term "dismal science" as way of lambasting economists' claims that markets were an alternative to slavery, in his "Occasional Essay on the Negro Question." In that essay, he denounced economists because they, like evangelical Christians, asserted the common humanity of black and white as grounds for opposing slavery. To Carlyle, groups such as blacks and the Irish were subhumans, on par with "two-legged calves" and horses. In this essay, we examine Carlyle's essay in greater detail, showing exactly how far he was willing to go in denying universal brotherhood. We then turn to his economist foes, starting with John Stuart Mill, showing how they used economics rather than religion to combat Carlyle. From there, we explore the foundation of such arguments in Adam Smith, who claimed that the real mark of humanity was the ability to use language. For Smith, language was important because it allows people to trade, and thus to specialize. So in the end, it was the ability to trade that distinguished man from the animals.

In 1915 he received a Master of Arts degree in German from the University of Nebraska and a degree in music from Lincoln Musical College. After teaching in high school at Goodland, Kansas, Kies accepted a pastorate in Illinois for two years. He graduated from the Chicago Musical College in 1920, then taught English at Penn College in Iowa until 1924 after which time he accepted a teaching position at the State College of Washington in Pullman, Washington. In 1928 he received a doctorate in English from the University of Chicago. He worked at the State College of Washington until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1956. He died at Pullman in 1971.     Extractions: The History of Alton The buildings and grounds at Alton are listed on the Register of the National Estate , Register of Historic Buildings, National Trust Register , and the Victorian Heritage Register Major Thomas Mitchell ascended and named Mount Macedon in 1836 on his trip through 'Australia Felix'. Pastoral settlement of the Port Phillip District developed along his route, including the area around Mount Macedon. John Carre Riddell was among those who settled to the south and when Crown Land was made available for sale in 1854 he was a major purchaser. The discovery of gold at Bendigo Creek (Sandhurst, later Bendigo) and Forest Creek (Castlemaine) in 1851 led to the settlement of Middle Gully (now Macedon), strategically located on the southern edge of the Black Forest. Tenders for the railway to Sandhurst were called in 1856 and the railhead reached Sunbury (1859), then Woodend and finally Sandhurst (1862). The massive influx of construction workers fuelled development of Middle Gully and it was finally proclaimed as the township of Macedon in 1861. The messmate and alpine ash forests of the Mount Macedon ranges proved a rich source from sawyers and splitters fed the needs of the growing metropolis as well as mining and railway construction. By 1854 the Dodgshon Timber Mill and the Christian Timber Mill were operating on the slopes of Mount Macedon. A school opened at Mount Macedon in January 1858 to meet the needs of the growing population. Land on the ridge between the Turitable and Willimigongon Creeks was subdivided in 1857 with these generous blocks sloping away from the road (the area from Douglas Road in the south to Evesham Road in the north).

This led to devolving a measure of self-government to some colonies (Canada, New Zealand, Australia, The Cape). Against this strategy of preparing for separation, the historian James Anthony Froude (1818-1894) argued that a Commonwealth of free English-speaking countries, rather than an Empire, should be looked for, and that the open expanses of virgin land would be the democratic park where ordinary workers would breathe fresh air. After a tour of English colonies, he renewed his reflections on the subject in 1886, in a book whose starting point was the republican dream of harmony first formulated in 1656 by James Harrington in his Oceana.
