Extractions: Irishman Lieutenant Colonel Anthony St Leger, later a governor of St Lucia, organised a two mile sweepstake for 3 year olds on September 24th 1776 at Cantley Common. The first year the race was actually called the St Leger was in 1778. In 1779 the race was moved to its present venue at Town Moor. Between 1915 and 1918 the race was held at Newmarket (September Stakes); in 1940 it was at Thirsk, in 1941 at Manchester, from 1942 to 1944 at Newmarket and in 1945 it was at York. Subsidence on the course in 1989 necessitated a move north of the border to Ayr.
