Extractions: Mary Anne Evans, the youngest of five children, was born at South Farm Arbury in 1819. She was always drawn to books and at the age of 29 Anne moved to London, where she began writing articles for the Westminister Review . It was here that Mary Anne met and fell in love with George Lewis. Despite the fact that he was already married, the two secretly held a relationship and considered themselves to be "spiritually married." With George's support Mary Anne began writing fiction and went on to publish Scenes of Clerical Life The Mill on the Floss Silas Marner (1861), and Daniel Deronda (1876), all under the pseudonym George Eliot. While all her works were well received, she continued to write under the false name to conceal her illegal marriage to Lewes. Mary Anne wrote up until George's death in 1878, after which she eventually remarried. However, without her true love Mary Anne was lonely and heartbroken and suddenly died only 8 months after her second marriage. She is buried in a London cemetery next to her spiritual husband, always to be remembered as one of the greatest English novelists.
