When I think of her and the dreary, commonplace, brown farm-house, in a doorway of which I first saw her framed, and later of the wee, but cleanly, cabin in which I saw her lying at rest, I think of smooth green hills that rise in noble billows, of valleys so wide and deep that they could hold a thousand cottage farms, of trees that were globe-like from being left unharried by the winds, of cattle red and black and white and black, great herds dotting the hills, and of barns so huge that they looked more like great hangars for flying-machines than storehouses for hay and grain. Yes, everywhere was plenty, rich fields of wheat and corn and rye and oats, with here and there specializing farmers who grew only tomatoes or corn or peas or ran dairies, men who somehow seemed to grow richer than the others. He was the father of three sons and two daughters, so I was told, all of whom must have hated him; those I knew did, anyhow. For one of the sons, when first I wandered into the region, had already gone to the far West, after pausing to throw a pitchfork at his father and telling him to go to hell, or so the story went. Another, whom I knew quite well, being a neighbor of a relative of mine, had married after being "turned out," as he said, by "the old man" because he wouldn't work hard enough. And yet he was a good enough worker to take over and pay for a farm of forty acres of fertile land in seven years, also eventually to acquire an automobile, a contraption which his father denounced as "a loafer's buggy."

The University of Pennsylvania Library holds the most important collection of manuscripts regarding Theodore Dreiser (1873-1945), whose prolific career included work as a newspaperman, magazine editor, novelist, and essayist. His ground-breaking novel, Sister Carrie, first published in 1900, is frequently cited as an influential turning point in the development of the American novel. Steven Pastore, proprietor of Deerfield Books, has generously turned over to the Library a group of more than forty photographsa group which includes a never-before-published image of Theodore and his brother Ed as toddlers; two portraits of Dreiser as an adolescent and as a teenager; both formal and informal shots of his second wife Helen; as well as several candid pictures of Dreiser at home and on trips. Mr. Pastore is the author of Sinclair Lewis: A Descriptive Bibliography and is currently working with James Hutchison on a Dreiser bibliography.

Extractions: DREISER, THEODORE: (Herman) Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945) was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on 27 August 1871. Many years of travel, seeking a better life and one in which he felt comfortable would eventually bring Dreiser to New York. During the Congress on Literature at the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, Hamlin Garland expressed America's need for a new kind of literature. Garland called this new literature "veritism" and "local color"something authentically American rather than derivative of Europe. At the same time, twenty-two-year-old Theodore Dreiser was in Chicago covering the World's Fair as a reporter for the St. Louis Republic. Although Dreiser did not attend the Congress on Literature, he was to play a principal role in the fulfillment of Garland's dream for American literature in the decades that followed. In New York, he would receive a job at Pulitzer's paper, The World , which was, at the time, leading the fight in the yellow journalism war against Hearst's Journal . He covered a streetcar strike in Brooklyn by actually going out and riding the rails during the strike to see angry workers confronting scab drivers. He later incorporated these impressions into his first novel, Sister Carrie Ev'ry Month , "the Woman's Magazine of Literature and Music."

A pioneer of naturalism in American literature, Dreiser wrote novels reflecting his mechanistic view of life, a concept that held man as the victim of such ungovernable forces as economics, biology, society, and even chance. In his works, conventional morality is unimportant, consciously virtuous behavior having little to do with material success and happiness. Dreiser was born into a large and poor family. His education was irregular, but, with help from a sympathetic high school teacher, he spent the year 1889-90 at the Univ. of Indiana. After working as a journalist on several midwestern newspapers, he went in 1894 to New York City, where he began a career in publishing, eventually rising to the presidency of Butterick Publications. Extractions: It is an open secret that even critics who admire Dreiser, consider him to be a horrible writer technically. American Tragedy has been called "the worst-written great novel in the world" and the otherwise loathsome Garrison Keillor has an amusing column about how bad he finds Sister Carrie on rereading it. His books have all the literary grace of the phone book. Thus, his reputation rests solely on the agreement of Left wing critics with his hatred of American capitalism. Well, 100 years on, I think we can safely say that the American system has served us pretty well and the Sister Carrie's of the world are not simply insignificant but, worse for a writer, uninteresting.
