    Extractions: ISBN: 0-09-977191-8 reviewed by Ann Skea This is a dog's dinner of a book: a feast for those who gleefully devour anything by Thomas Pynchon; a glorious mess for lovers of 18th Century Fielding-style sagas; but a vast, indigestible serving of fact, fiction, fantasy magic, vaudeville, titillation and philosophy for those with delicate tastes. shows Thomas Pynchon in playful mood. He is disguised as the "far travel'd" Reverend Wicks Cherrycoke, who tells tales to amuse his niece, Tenebrae, and his twin nephews, named Pitt and Pliny "so that each might be term'd "the Elder" or "the Younger" as might day-to-day please one, or annoy his Brother". The year is 1789, and the Rev'd. has been in Philadelphia for the funeral of an astrologer "Friend of years ago", Charles Mason, who with Jeremiah Dixon (surveyor) established the Mason-Dixon Line separating the slave-holding colony of Maryland from the free colony of Pennsylvania. Cherrycoke, it seems, accompanied Mason and Dixon on their journeys. First, to the Dutch colony of South Africa to observe the Transit of Venus, then to America, another frontier colony where slavery and division were similarly commonplace. But the Reverend gentleman's chronicle of these journeys is designed to keep rampaging children quiet and maintain him in the favours of his sister, Mrs J.Wade LeSpark, in whose home he is a guest. Excellent skills of story-telling are essential, for "too much evidence of Juvenile Rampage at the wrong moment...and Boppo! 'twill be Out the Door with him, where waits the Winter Block and Blade". You can see that the Rev'd. Wade Cherrycoke favours High-Flown Language and Capitals, a style which takes a little getting used to after the cropped and allusive prose of most modern novels. Nor can his account of events be relied on.

He was born in Victoria, British Columbia, in 1956 and grew up in a rural area outside the city. After studying for two years at the University of Victoria in the late-1970s, he moved to Ottawa, where in 1980 he received his B.A. in Political Science from Carleton University. He then founded a national student organization that encouraged debate on the ethical implications of scientific research, and he traveled widely overseas. In 1983, he began graduate work in Political Science at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he studied international relations, defense and arms control policy, and conflict theory. He also read widely in social psychology, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, philosophy of mind and language, and environmental science. After completing his Ph.D. in 1989, he moved to the University of Toronto and, in the subsequent eight years, led several international research projects examining the links between environmental stress and violence in developing countries. In recent years, his research has focused on how societies adapt to complex economic, ecological, and technological change.     Extractions: If you are like most people, you have no idea just who Thomas Dixon, Jr., is, and that is a sad thing. I can tell you that your grandparents or great-grandparents most likely heard the name. Thomas Dixon was quite famous in his time, which was early in the 20th century. He was an amazing manno one I know of has ever been so successful at so many different careers. His Reconstruction trilogy served as the basis for the movie Birth of a Nation I dare say some of you may have heard of this. The movie, directed by D.W. Griffiths, was one of the first major motion pictures, and it is still studied and watched today on the basis of its merits as a film. The story, though, was Dixon's account of Reconstructionbased on his own memories and on the facts as he researched them. The movie has been defiled as racist propaganda; it was boycotted quite vociferously at the time of its release, and in fact the movie may never have seen the light of day had it not been for Woodrow Wilson. Thomas Dixon had known Wilson briefly as a student, and this helped win him an audience for the movie within the White House itself. After seeing the epic masterpiece, Wilson uttered the famous words that have defined the motion pictureit is like "writing history with lightning." Birth of a Nation influenced American thought and helped shape race relations in this country up to the present day. He must not be forgotten, and I will not let him be forgotten. Thomas Dixonthe real one and not the beast he is sometimes made out to bewill always have a sanctuary here. I do not ask you to like Dixon or agree with him, only to study him. His ideas are necessarily out-of-date and, to some degree, racist, but to read him is to come to a better understanding of race relations in this country. The Negro question was truly this "white man's burden" because he loved the black man but could not find a place for him in America. Does this not sound like a timely question even today?

Scholars have highlighted Dixon as a proponent of white supremacy and traditional roles for women, but have made little attempt to analyze the context and contradictions of his complex life, Hall said. Gillespie and Hall are teaching an undergraduate seminar on Dixon during the spring semester. Students from the class will present papers during the symposium.
