Canku Ota - May 6, 2000-Internet Brings Canadian Culture To World (The aboriginal stuDents) will have an audience of youth all over the world eagerto learn about their culture,'' said Odd De Presno, Kidlink's founDer and http://www.turtletrack.org/Issues00/Co05062000/CO_05062000_Internet.htm
Extractions: Children in classrooms around the world will soon be learning about their counterparts in Canada's aboriginal community by clicking on the Internet. Kidlink, one of the world's largest online communities for youth, plans to host Web pages featuring Canadian aboriginal cultures and languages. Reaching 175,000 people in 135 countries and 15 languages, Kidlink offers e-mail conferencing to students aged eight to 18 and their teachers. "(The aboriginal students) will have an audience of youth all over the world eager to learn about their culture,'' said Odd de Presno, Kidlink's founder and executive director. De Presno recently returned from Canada, where he met with members of the Assembly of First Nations. He also met with Industry Canada's SchoolNet which has agreed to co-operate with Kidlink. "The world is not CNN and Hollywood. There are 6,000 odd languages in the world with three languages dying every day. We have to support diversity and to do this we need to have diversity to show. Hopefully, we learn from each other and with a global network of youth, empower them.'' De Presno came up with the Kidlink idea back in 1989, inspired by a two-week Internet project linking 250 students in his country, Canada and the United States. He began planning a global network for children and teachers.
Canku Ota - Sept. 23, 2000 - Preserving US Native Languages their youth's knowledge and appreciation of their area, people, language, culture, the way the society works, history, says Odd De Presno, Kidlink's executive http://www.turtletrack.org/Issues00/Co09232000/CO_09232000_Kidlink.htm
Extractions: Native Americans are invited to join K i d l i n k 's W h o A m I educational program in their languages. Out of 176 living languages listed, most are endangered, and spoken by less than 2 million American Indians, Eskimos, and Aleuts. The list includes famous names like Apache, Blackfoot, Cherokee, Comanche, Cree, Inuktitut, Mohawk, and Navaho. Jointly with Canku Ota (Many Paths), K i d l i n k proposes its eight-month, multilingual W h o A m I as a vehicle to protect United States' indigenous heritage. Key is the program's record of motivating children and youth to read and write in their own language. "To indigenous communities, it is a means to increase their youth's knowledge and appreciation of their area, people, language, culture, the way the society works, history," says Odd de Presno, K i d l i n k 's executive director. "It is also a means to communicate their culture to outsiders using their students as agents, supported by teachers." K i d l i n k is a non-profit grassroots organization providing free educational services to children and youth through the secondary school. Our work is supported by 79 public mailing lists for conferencing, a private network for Real-Time Interactions (like chats), an online art exhibition site, and some 500 volunteers living throughout the world. Most volunteers are teachers and parents. Since the start 10 years ago, over 175,000 kids from 137 countries on all continents have participated in our activities.

Extractions: Speaker: Odd de Presno (opresno@kidlink.org), Kidlink Kidlink demographics: Since the start in 1990, 120,000 students up to the age of 15 living in 119 countries have participated in Kidlink's free multilingual educational programs. More than half the participants are girls. Kidlink gives ample room for youth with physical or psychological disadvantages or differences. Abstract body Kidlink was born on a dream: By letting students through the age of 15 talk to each others, they will get a direct experience with friends having the common experience of childhood but often in very different circumstances. By hearing a range of opinions and developing familiarity with different ideas, they can overcome some communication barriers and solve some problems in a more co-operative manner. We hope that when Kidlink kids become adults, they will take a more global and long-term perspective on issues, rather than acting to maximize local, short-term interests.
