Extractions: TREDEGAR PEOPLE ANEURIN BEVAN (1897-1960) was born at Tredegar at 32, Charles Street. In his early years, he was a coal miner who turned to politics. He became the Minister of Health. In 1948, he introduced the National Health Service based on the Tredegar Medical Aid Society. The Tredegar Medical Aid Society was a scheme where workers (mainly miners) paid a subscription weekly from their wages, to help with their medical costs In June 1924, as a Labour Candidate, Aneurin Bevan entered the House of Commons with a majority of 11,164 over his Liberal and Conservative opponents. Aneurin Bevan, MP for Ebbw Vale, is commemorated with large engraved memorial stones at the head of Sirhowy Hill, between Tredegar and Ebbw Vale . NEIL KINNOCK was also born at Tredegar in 1942. Educated at Georgetown Junior School and Lewis School, Pengam. Neil progressed to Cardiff University where he met his wife Glenys (now also MEP) He became leader of the Labour Party in 1983 when they were in opposition. He held this position until 1992 and he became European Commissioner in 1995, with the responsibility for Transport. JONATHAN EVANS was born in Tredegar in 1950, he was educated at Lewis School, Pengam, Howardian High School, Cardiff and the College of Law, Guildford and London. He became Conservative for Brecon and Radnor from 1992 until 1997. He became Chief Conservative Party Spokesman for Wales in 1997. In 1999 Mr Evans was first elected MEP for Wales and in December of 2001 was elected Leader of the Conservative Party in the European Parlament

She had been ill for several months. Mrs Davis, mother of Mrs T C Deavenport, made her home in Okolona before going to Phenix City nine years ago to live with her daughter. A native of Chickasaw County, Mrs. Davis was the daughter of the late James Monroe Cole, of Coleville. In 1897 she was married to George C Davis, who passed away 14 years ago.
