    Extractions: There has been no finer writer on the game of golf than Bernard Darwin, who was the grandson of Charles Darwin, author of the Origin of Species, the great work on evolution which challenged all earlier theories on the subject. Bernard Darwin had a conventional up-bringing of the sons of successful men, being educated at Eton college and Cambridge University, where he gained his golf blue 1895-97, being Captain in his last year. After Cambridge he was a court lawyer in London for a few years. He was not happy in his work and soon began to write about his first love, the game of golf. Over the years he became acknowledged as one of the best essayists in Britain and the first man to describe golf in immaculate prose, often with touches of humour. His weekly articles in the London Times revealed a prodigious memory for literature in general and great appreciation of all aspects of golf. He would quote an apt passage from Charles Dickens, of whom he was a leading authority, both in articles and reports of tournaments and matches. Such was his wide horizon, he was later to be the Editor of the renowned Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. His articles were enjoyed by nearly as many non-golfers as players of the game. No mean player himself, he reached the semi-finals of the British Amateur Championship in 1909 and 1922 and won numerous amateur tournaments. He played in the first Walker Cup match at the National, Long Island, New York in 1922. Accompanying the team as Times correspondent, the Captain, Robert Harris, fell ill and Darwin took his place in the side both as player and Captain. Partnering Cyril Tolley in the 36-hole Scotch Foursomes, they were heavily defeated by Francis Ouimet and Jesse Guilford, but he was one of three British winners in the singles, beating W.C. Fownes, Jr., the US Captain, by 3 and 1.

There are many good reasons now to resurrect an older view which was eclipsed by Darwinism, and to re-examine its implications in the light of new knowledge and of the manifest bankruptcy of current evolutionary philosophy. Indeed, evolutionary philosophy has been so detrimental to society in terms of its influence on international politics and on the spirit of Big Business over the last sixty years since 1914, that it ought to be judged by its fruits and replaced. Darwin himself was very conscious of his departure from a view of Nature which had previously been held by Naturalists regarding the purposeful preparation.of the earth for man, and there are not a few who believe that this awareness was the cause of the disease in his own spirit. Indeed, he seemed almost anxious to preserve the older view, if not to embellish it, in the second of two essays which he published in 1842 and 1844, which were really the forerunners of The Origin of Species .

Claiming that the board voted to "delete virtually any mention of evolution from the state's science curriculum," news articles portrayed the vote as "one of the most far-reaching efforts by creationists to challenge the teaching of evolution in schools." To Randy Moore, the editor of the magazine of the National Association of Biology Teachers, it was the return of the dark ages. "It's going on everywhere, and the creationists are winning," he said. Letters-to-the-editor pages around the country were filled with missives pitying the unwashed uninformed who would presume to question the "fact" of evolution. But evolution is a theory, not a fact. And when it comes to the "facts" that the theory can explain, the Kansas Board of Education has a point. Microevolution takes a short-term perspective and focuses on intraspecies variation. It assumes that natural selection operates on existing variations in populations to bring about relatively small changes in population characteristics. Changing beak sizes of Galapagos finches, color changes in Manchester moths, and bacterial antibiotic resistance are the classic examples.

It is not meant to be published at least in his lifetime. In it, Darwin struggles with his religious beliefs. "[A] source of conviction in the existence of God ... follows from the extreme difficulty or rather impossibility of conceiving this immense and wonderful universe, including man with his capability of looking far backwards and far into futurity, as the result of blind chance or necessity. When thus reflecting ... I deserve to be called a theist." It is this conviction that underlies the last passage of On the Origin of Species . And yet, Darwin is not certain it is truly his own. "[C]an the mind of man, which has, as I fully believe, been developed from a mind as low as that possessed by the lowest animal, be trusted when it draws such a grand conclusion? May not these be the result of the connection between cause and effect which strikes us as a necessary one, but probably depends merely on inherited experience? Nor must we overlook the probability of the constant inculcation in a belief in God on the minds of children producing so strong and perhaps an inherited effect on their brains not yet fully developed, that it would be as difficult for them to throw off their belief in God, as for a monkey to throw off its instinctive fear and hatred of a snake.

    Extractions: SOTHEBY'S TO SELL BOOKS FROM THE LIBRARY OF LORD REES-MOGG BOOKS from the library of well-known bibliophile Lord Rees-Mogg, former editor of The Times, will be offered in Sotheby's sale of Printed Books and Maps in London on Thursday, January 28, 1999. William Rees-Mogg, who bought his first rare book in 1939, at the age of 11, describes book collecting as "a consistent pleasure, and an unceasing form of self-education" to which he owes "half at least" of his store of knowledge. This diverse collection, which includes finely printed and bound books as well as important works of English literature and history, was amassed over 60 years, and is distinguished by the number of works in attractive and original bindings, often with interesting provenances. Lord and Lady Rees-Mogg have recently moved from their home in Hinton Blewitt into a smaller property in Somerset, and fine art and antiques that they could not take with them were sold by Sotheby's in October 1998 in a house contents sale at Prior Park in Bath. Of particular interest among Lord Rees-Mogg's books is one volume which contains two separate works, A Genuine Account of the most horrid Parricide committed by Mary Blandy and The Genuine Tryal at Large of Mary Blandy. These two pamphlets relate to the story of the notorious murderess, Mary Blandy, the only child of Francis Blandy, who was hanged in 1752, after being found guilty of poisoning her father. Mary was courted by marine Captain William Henry Cranstoun who proposed marriage. Mary's father (an attorney from Henley-on-Thames) objected, suspecting that Cranstoun was a philanderer and already married. Mary was persuaded by Captain Cranstoun to administer arsenic in small doses to her father, who died after some months in August 1751. As Mary explained at her trial:
