Extractions: George Washington Crile was born on November 11th, 1864 on a farm near Chili, Ohio. His life spanned the two most horrific events in American history: the civil war and WW II. Military medicine and combat surgery proved to be a seminal laboratory for Crile, an experience that had application to civilian medicine. He served in the Spanish American War as a Brigade Surgeon with the rank of Major. It was in this war that Crile saw hundreds of soldiers suffering from exhaustion, shock, and fear. Prior to his military service, Crile had conducted research experiments on animals and noted the relationship between shock, blood pressure, and the onset of death. In 1906 he performed the first successful human to human blood transfusion at St. Alexis Hospital in Cleveland. The Great War (1914-1918) was horrific, but a vital laboratory for the advancement of field surgery, triage, and a team approach to treatment. Dr.Crile established the first detachment of the American Expeditionary Force and was subsequently put in charge of research for the AEF. Crile's cousin, Dr. William Lower joined the Unit as Commanding Officer, as did Dr. Fred Bunts. After the War, these three surgeons were joined by Dr. John Phillips and in 1921 this group practice was organized as a non-profit corporation known as the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

Named after General George Washington Crile (1864-1943) the hospital was designed as a "temporary" facility, but remained in nearly continuous service for 30 years: army hospital 1944-46; VA hospital 1946-64, and as the Western Campus of Cuyahoga Community College 1966-75. Nearly 20,000 patients were treated from WWII and Korea at Crile. The hospital also held 300 German prisoners of war and a few Italian prisoners during WW II. In 1956 Crile supported a Nike missile installation, one of several in the Cleveland area. In 1975 the Crile barracks were razed and a modern campus appeared on the site that had been a healing ground. The Western Campus currently enrolls over 12,000 students fulfilling the legacy of Crile, on our journey from healing to learning.

Extractions: George Crile and the lessons of military medicine in World War I. George W. Crile, Sr. (1864-1943), gained important experience during medical service in both the Spanish American War (1898-99) and World War I (1914-18). In the latter conflict, Crile led the Lakeside Unit, a Cleveland hospital contingent that served first at the Ambulance Americaine, or American Military Hospital, in Paris (1915) and later at Base Hospital No. 4 in Rouen, France (1917-18). While humanity provided reason enough to serve in France, Crile also perceived an opportunity to continue research upon shock. Before going to France, Crile explained this in a letter to his benefactor, Samuel Mather: The research to be carried out is that of observing the effects of fear and exhaustion upon the human body. In my laboratory we have for many years studied the effect of fear and exhaustion in the bodies of animals, but in a peaceful community there is almost no opportunity for the study of human material. In Europe such opportunities are now abundant. They may never again be available on such a scale. The information to be gained by such a study would be of the highest scientific and practical value. It so happens that in no other place but Cleveland has this fundamental problem been so thoroughly investigated, yet our researches still lack the material which the Paris Hospital could supply....
