Extractions: The Crafts (in character) This date recalls the lives of Ellen and William Craft. Ellen and William Craft were two African-American abolitionists known for William's autobiographical slave narrative that described the couple's dramatic escape from slavery. William and Ellen Craft's self-liberation is one of the most remarkable escapes ever recorded in a historic slave narrative. Ellen was born in 1826 in Clinton, Georgia, to a biracial slave woman and her white master, and was so light-skinned that she was often mistaken for a member of her father's family. This infuriated her mistress and, as a result, at age 11 Ellen was given as a wedding gift to a daughter who lived in Macon. There she met William, whom she married in 1846. Two years later, the Crafts began to devise their escape plan, which involved Ellen posing as a white slaveholder traveling with "his" slave, William. This required several levels of deception. She cut her hair, changed her walk, and wrapped her jaw in bandages to disguise her lack of a beard. To hide her illiteracy, she wrapped her right arm in a sling to have a ready excuse for being unable to sign papers; and Craft explained all of the bandages by claiming to be an invalid traveling north to receive medical care. In this manner, the Crafts traveled from Georgia to Pennsylvania by train, steamer, and ferry without being discovered.

Extractions: Ames, IA 50011-2140 Biographical Note William A. Craft was born on September 9, 1894 near Jonesboro, Ark. and died January 28, 1963 in Des Moines, Iowa. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Iowa State University in 1922 and 1923 respectively. He received a Ph. D. in 1932 from the University of Wisconsin. He was an associate professor at Oklahoma State University from 1923-1936. Craft joined the U.S. department of Agriculture in 1936 and was the director of regional swine breeding laboratory for the USDA and cooperating states from 1937-59. He was made an associate professor in animal husbandry at Iowa State University in 1943 and was designated professor emeritus in 1960. Craft received the Certificate for Superior Service from the USDA in 1949 and served as president of the Osborn Research Club at Iowa State in 1958. He was also a member of Alpha Zeta and Sigma Xi. Scope and Content Note The collection contains biographical information, writings on hog raising and the development of the field of animal husbandry into animal science, one folder of correspondence, research notes on swine, teaching materials from graduate animal hsubandry/science courses (1950s-60s), and one folder of materials from Jay Lush s seminar, Quantitative Genetics.

Blundell brought the live performance of his book, "The Art and Craft of Feature Writing," to the Detroit Free Press. Blundell played himself; the cast included an assortment of imaginary friends and pet peeves. In one scene, Blundell had drinks and talked story with the intelligent, interested and totally imagined friend whom Blundell writes for and who reels him back in when his writing gets gassy and bloated. In another scene, Blundell nearly came to blows with his mean alter ego, who jabs Blundell mercilessly with questions and challenges to write leaner, cleaner copy. Blundell's toughest lines, though, pilloried his pet peeves: "I'm a strong opponent of outlining. It's deciding in advance what the story will be, and then just bolting the whole thing together like something out of a hardware store. Tortured transitions are the mark of an outlined story." ... "The anecdotal lead is a plague on newspapers. It is half destroying our business." ... "I believe that one of the things that is ruining our stories is the presence of way too many people saying way too many banal, stupid and unnecessary things. We're not writing research reports; we're writing stories.'' Blundell has a plan, as well as peeves, and you can read the plan in his book. Let's meet some of the peeves.

INDEX William AspinwallI was an often controversial and apparently contentious figure in colonial times. He immigrated to New England in 1630 and settled initially at Charlestown. He was admitted to the Boston church as member #10, about August, 1630 and was chosen deacon there 27 August 1630. He was made Freeman 3 April 1632. His occupation was notary and court recorder and he was also a skilled surveyor, "...for on more than one ocasion he was asked to view the boundary between two towns and 'make a draft thereof.'" ("The Great Migration Begins," Anderson, pg. 55) He was apparently well-educated, given his employment in quasi-legal positions and based also upon his publication of many politico- theological tracts after he returned to England. Anderson indicates that there is no evidence that he attended Oxford or Cambridge, but speculates that he might have spent some time at one of the lesser Inns of Court in London.

A quarter of a century ago,William and I were slaves in the state of Georgia.Us, and thousands of others, had a desire to be free.For this we were willing to make any sacrafice, or to endure any amount of suffering. In this state of mind we commenced planning. After thinking of various ways that might be tried, it occured to us , that one might act the part of a master and the other as a slave. I dressed as the master and William as the slave. I needed a beard so I acted like I had a tooth ace and William acted like he had a broken arm and wore a cast.As time passed we went through the Underground Railroad. After that we stopped at a first-class hotel in Charleston. Then we stopped at a simular hotel in Richmond. We new we must pass through Baltimore, but we didn't know the obstacles. Finally, we arrived in Philly.On our trip a few people gave a few tips on where to go. But we were still scared we would get caught by our masters because of a Fugitive Slave Act that was new. This is where if any slave was caught in a free coutry they would get sent back to their masters.
