Extractions: Donald Nielson Donald Nielson, a lifelong resident of the Dove Creek area, passed away at his residence on Aug. 30, 2001. He was 77. A funeral service was held on Friday, Aug. 31, 2001 at 2 p.m. in the Cortez Four Corners Funeral Chapel. Cremation followed the services. Internment will take place on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001 at 4 p.m. in the Peel Cemetery. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Dove Creek VFW Post. Nielson was born to Gennis James and Adelia (Dee) Vurdick Nielson on Jan. 22, 1924, at Monticello, Utah. After attending schools in the area, Nielson served his country in the U.S. Army, during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. There he performed his duties in the Army Signal Corps, in communications work. On Feb. 14, 1993, in Dove Creek, CO, he married Nancyray Smith. Nielson was a rancher, uranium miner, and was also previously employed with Nielson Construction Company. He was a lifetime member of the Dove Creek VFW Post; a former member of the American Legion Post 69 of Dolores; a former member of the Cortez Elks Club; and a member of the LDS Church, Eastland Branch. He enjoyed working, especially with his cattle and horses. He loved to garden, and enjoyed sharing his produce with others. Donald also loved his grandchildren very much.
