   Extractions: Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) Edward Carpenter was a pioneering socialist and radical prophet of a new age of fellowship in which social relations would be transformed by a new spiritual consciousness. The way he lived his life, perhaps even more than his extensive writings, was the essence of his message. It is perhaps not surprising that his reputation faded quickly after his death, as he lived much of his life modestly spreading his message by personal contact and example rather than by major literary works or through a national political career. He has been described as having that unusual combination of qualities: charisma with modesty. His ideas became immensely influential during the early years of the Socialist movement in Britain: perhaps Carpenter's most widely remembered legacy to the Socialist and Co-operative movements was his anthem England Arise ! but it is his writings on the subject of homosexuality and his open espousal of this identity that makes him unique.

Peter Ouspensky, the Russian mystic and philosopher, corresponded with Edward Carpenter and translated one of Carpenter's works: "Love and Death - a study of human evolution and transfiguration" This was published in Petrograd in 1915. Walt Whitman, whom Carpenter visited, described him as "one of the torchbearers; an exemplar of a loftier England" and later "Carpenter is one of the altogether beautiful people who have made me welcome on earth".    Extractions: Biography work bibliography British social reformer. He studied at Trinity Hall, Cambridge and then was ordained deacon in 1870, to become curate at St. Edward's Church, Cambridge. After two years he left the church and became a travelling lecturer in the north of England for the University Extension Movement. His father died in 1882 and left him 6000 pounds, which made him financially independent. He bought a smallholding at Millthorpe near Sheffield and took up market gardening and sandal making. His Millthorpe cottage became the focus for Sheffield socialists and radicals. He met George Merrill on a train, and in 1898 Merrill moved into the cottage at Millthorpe. They lived together for thirty years. A black and white photograph of Edward Carpenter and George Merrill is in the Sheffield City Archives and is reproduced in Colin Spencer, (1995) . The couple were used as the model for the relationship between Maurice and Alec, the gamekeeper, in the novel Maurice by E. M. Forster

He came from an upper-class family and was educated at Brighton College and Cambridge, where he did well at mathematics.He took holy Orders and worked in a Cambridge parish. He had a sort of breakdown,brought on perhaps by reading the poetry of Walt Whitman. He gave up his fellowship and religious vocation and for a few years worked with the poor people of Sheffield,where he was involved with a vegetarian cafe and the Cambridge Outreach teaching. After a very difficult few years he came into an inheritance when his father died and was then able to live more as he wished.He had a house built a few miles from Sheffield where he lived with a partner. Edward Carpenter was a prolific writer and his best known work is 'Towards Democracy ' , a collection of poetry on spiritual and democratic themes.He also wrote a very powerful autobiography 'My Life and Dreams' towards the end of his life.He was a rebel who revolted against everything Victorian:their narrow view of spirituality,their obsession with money and capital,their narrow views of human potential and worth.Edward Carpenter was involved in all the main progressive movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was a Fabian Socialist and a friend of William Morris a Vegetarian an anarchist and communist; spiritual adept and sexual revolutionary.

   Extractions: Biography: Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) In 1895, the same year that Oscar Wilde was sent to prison for gross indecency, English socialist Edward Carpenter privately circulated his first book about homosexuality. Homogenic Love and its Place in a Free Society defended love between men as inborn and, therefore, natural just as Karl Ulrichs' pamphlets had thirty years before. Carpenter believed that Urnings are members of a third sex, and that their position as intermediates between male and female gives them unique and valuable talents. Soon after publishing Homogenic Love, Carpenter fell in love with George Merrill, a sometime barkeep and servant. Merrill moved in with Carpenter, and the two became devoted companions. Carpenter continued to write prolifically on socialist and homosexual subjects, and even though little of his work was truly original, personal warmth and utopian idealism suffused his prose and won him a loyal audience.     Extractions: Anglican cleric, itinerant professor, socialist, poet, anarchist, pioneer of gay liberation, and often considered a prophet. After leaving Cambridge, Carpenter sought to live a simple rural life that hoped would involve "whole-bodied" as well as whole-hearted comradeship. This often meant living with married couples and their families. He also lived for a while on John Ruskin's St. George's Farm, before purchasing his own farm at Millthorpe in 1883 with money inherited when his parents died. Shortly after they met in the early 1880's, Carpenter joined Havelock Ellis's "Fellowship of the New Life," a faction of which became the Fabian Society in 1884. Carpenter remained on good terms with both groups. He studied the Bhagavad-Gita and even traveled to India in 1890 to learn more about Hinduism. He was also friends with Emma Goldman and often supported socialist causes financially and in print. However, his preference for personal politics over national movements, his opposition to any theory that claimed to be the final answer to society's problems, and his eclecticism made him as much an anarchist as a socialist. Carpenter believed that society would develop by a process he called "exfoliation," a form of Lamarckian evolution propelled by will in which society was expected throw off its successive skins (e.g. capitalist institutions) as it outgrew them. Carpenter was also an advocate of women's liberation. He regarded marriage in England as both enforced celibacy and a form of prostitution. He did not believe women would truly be free until a socialist revolution occurred. In contrast to many of his contemporaries, however, this led him to conclude that all oppressed workers should support women's emancipation, rather than to subordinate women's rights to worker's rights. Olive Schreiner, Edith Lees (later Mrs. Havelock Ellis), and his six sisters were among the people who helped to edit his writings on women.
