He studied Telesio, occultism and magic arts which meant he was regarded with suspicion in the Dominican monastery where he was training for his priesthood. He escaped from there first to Cosenza and then Naples, after being tried he was sent to prison for two years. After that he moved to Rome, Florence and Padua where he met Galileo. Along with his followers he vowed to fight Spanish control and set up a new ideal state from where the regeneration of Christian states would begin. He was once again arrested and tortured; in prison he started to write his major works including "La città del sole" where he imagines an ideal republic based on natural principles. Once free he moved to Paris where he spent his final years and published his masterpiece: "la Metaphysica". THE CAMPANELLA'S TEXTS ON LINE LiberLiber

Extractions: Shopping Cart Reviews Table of Contents Tommaso Campanella (1568-1639) is one of the most fascinating, if hitherto inaccessible, intellectuals of the Italian Renaissance. His work ranges across many of the intellectual, ecclesiastical, and political concerns of that tumultuous era. John Headley uses Campanella's life and works to open a window into this complex period. He not only explicates the frequently contradictory texts of a prolific author but also situates Campanella's writings amidst the larger currents of European thought. Review: "Headley's book is a carefully hewn intellectual history of the late Renaissance and of Campanella. This work also offers a major historiographical analysis of the meaning of the Renaissance and of its end as it merged into baroque, mannerist, and classical periods."

Extractions: Campanella, Tommaso 1568-1639, Italian Renaissance philosopher and writer. He entered the Dominican order at the age of 15, and although he was frequently in trouble with the authorities, he never left the church. Imprisoned in 1599 on the grounds that he was plotting against the Spanish rule of Naples, he was released in 1626 on the representation of Pope Urban VIII. His best-known work is Civitas solis (1623, tr. The City of the Sun ), an account of a utopian society that closely follows the pattern of Plato's Republic. Although he retained much of scholasticism and insisted on the preeminence of faith in matters of theology, he emphasized perception and experiment as the media of science. His importance, like that of Francis Bacon and Bruno, depends largely on his anticipation of what came to be the scientific attitude of empiricism.
