Country And Craft My dolly, she replies, But tone and smile and gesture say, My angelfrom the skies. (Ada Cambridge, 18441926, An Old Doll). http://www.homespun.com.au/publications/clothdollsandbears/article588.asp
Extractions: (Ada Cambridge, 1844-1926, An Old Doll) The playthings of child-hood days will always be held dear in our affections. I still have the old Wendy Boston teddy bear that Father Christmas left under the tree when he visited me for the first time, and shes been just as well loved by my son Max as she was by me. She sits on a shelf in his room now, along with a small collection of the familys treasured soft toys, including Bob. Bob is a peanut-shaped knitted doll with auburn curls and no limbs. When Max was just three months old and undergoing surgery in the Childrens Hospital, I found Bob on a stall outside the ward. Hed been knitted with love by a caring volunteer and was being sold for one dollar to raise money for the hospital. One of our favourite nurses on the ward, Chris, named him Bob from the old joke: What do you call a limbless man who goes swimming? There was something about Bob that just made me want to own him. He wasnt really an attractive doll in fact, quite the opposite. I could have bought a giant rainbow-coloured clown, a dapper golly or a raggedy doll from the stall, but I only wanted Bob. I like to think that it was the love that went into making him that reached out and touched my heart, just when I was feeling so scared and helpless while my baby was in hospital. When I tucked Bob under Maxs arm as he lay in his hospital cot, he squeezed his new doll tight and Im sure some of that love oozed out and made us both feel better.
