Extractions: For the foreign language learner there exist two important criteria of any didactic edition of comprehensive literary texts. These are, on the one hand, the quality of linguistic annotations and, on the other hand, a careful commentary in order to facilitate understanding. The following contribution is based on the assumption that the didactic resources available concerning Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 are insufficient. The Use of Literary Quotations and Allusions 4. Selected Bibliography Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451 was first recommended for foreign language teaching purposes more than twenty years ago (cf. Noçon, 1977, second edition 1981). In contrast to Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale , there exist several resources which may facilitate the practical work of the language teacher. To begin with, a didactic edition of the novel was published by Norbert Köhn (cf. Stuttgart, 1991, reprinted 1995) and in addition to that, a volume of annotations was produced by Erwin Kastner in the well-known series Aschendorffs Vokabularien (cf. Münster, 1992). Moreover, Dieter Vater published a didactic edition, a

Extractions: English and German are close cousins in the Germanic family of languages (see chart below), but they have both borrowed heavily from the Italic (Romanisch) branch of the long-gone Indo-European Ursprache (protolanguage). The simplified language family tree below shows how the Germanic (German, English) and Italic (Latin, French, Spanish, etc.) language branches developed from different ancestors. german.about.com/library/bllatein01.htm Here are some common and not-so-common German vocabulary terms that come either directly (directus - direkt) from Latin or are derived from Latin. Not all such borrowings are obvious. German Uhr (clock, hour) comes from Latin hora (hour) via French. (Which helps explain why the German abbreviation for "Uhr" is "h.") German Tinte (ink) comes from Middle Latin "tincta" (aqua), which meant colored fluid or tincture.
Astrology: Between Religion And The Empirical In the Babylonian creation myths of Enuma Elish (ca. Gaius Julius caesar (10044 BC)provided an example of this learned astrology which rejected the vulgar http://www.esoteric.msu.edu/VolumeIV/astrology.htm
Extractions: As much as astrology is anchored from the beginning in European religious history, it is experiencing a certain renaissance again today. In connection with the press and with television, a quite simple variety presents itself to the public eye, which promises "stress on the job" or "a romantic evening" and often thereby refutes itself. But this is not the whole story of astrology. Also in connection with new religious movements and in the framework of Christianity, but in the framework of spiritual interpretations of the natural sciences as well, astrology has again become current in the past years and decades. That this present concern with it is not limited to daily horoscopes in newspaper columns is shown by views such as those of the Benedictine Father Gerhard Voss, who speaks out in favor of astrology in a Christian context in his book
