Extractions: UPDATED 9-12-00 The Philobiblion, or "Love of Books" by Richard de Bury, 1345 Chapters One, Two and Three Translated into English by E.C. Thomas, 1888 Richard de Bury, a.k.a. Richard of Aungerville (1287-1345) ranks as perhaps the most enthusiastic proponent of the written word in the English world. Bury worked amongthe leading English scholars of his day, andservedas the tutor of young Edward of Windsor, who later became King Edward III. Under Edward's reign, Bury rose to the position of Lord Chancellor, which at the time was the England's highest office outside royalty. During his service to Edward, Bury served as an envoy to the papal court at Avignon, where he met Petrarch, the Italian bibliophile whose work is often seen as the single most important influence for the revival of classical literature in the Renaissance period. It is not certain how much Bury was influenced by Petrarch, but clearly the interests of the two men were very similar. Bury considered hisrelatively short book The Philobiblon his masterpiece, and it does seem to have been the crown of his career, as he died shortly after writing it in 1345. It soon became a popular work among scholars, and its first printing in Cologne in 1473 was followed by numerous other mass-produced editions.
