JUMP TO BOOKS There are numerous sites on the Web devoted to Burton, as well as many easily accessible books detailing his life and accomplishments there's no point in repeating such things here, beyond a few facts to jar the reader's memory he was captain in the Bombay Army; co-discoverer of the source of the White Nile with John Hanning Speke; British consul on the island of Fernando Po off the coast of Equatorial Guinea; at Damascus, Syria; at Trieste, Austria-Hungary and at Santos, Brazil. He was one of the most important linguists of his day, giving a well-received direct-from-Arabic English translation of the Arabian Nights in 16 volumes; original translator of the Kama Sutra ; expert swordsman; knighthood (1886) and a hundred other accomplishments, truly a 19th-Century Western Man in the best sense of the term. But then the 20th-Century came along, with its Stalinist "PC" cleansing of old works of history, which attempted to obliterate what I present here. There's another side, the suppressed, expurgated and censored side, that needs to be brought into the light. The following essays or chapters have been suppressed for various reasons Victorian prudishness and political reasons predominantly.

Extractions: BURSAR (Med. Lat. bursarius), literally a keeper of the bursa or purse. The word is now chiefly used of the official, usually one of the fellows, who administers the finances of a college at a university, or of the treasurer of a school or other institution. The term is also applied to the holder of a bursary, an exhibition at Scottish schools or universities, and also in England a scholarship or exhibition enabling a pupil of an elementary school to con.tinue his education at a secondary school. The term burse (Lat. bursa, Gr. /%paa, bag of skin) is particularly used of the embroidered purse which is one of the insignia of office of the lord high chancellor of England, and of the pouch which in the Roman Church contains the corporal in the service of the Mass. The bursa is a square case opening at one side only and covered and lined with silk or linen; one side should be of the colour of the vestments of the day. BURSIAN, CONRAD (18301883), German philologist and archaeologist, was born at Mutzschen in Saxony, on the 14th of November 1830. On the removal of his parents to Leipzig, he received his early education at the Thomas school, and entered the university in 1847. Here he studied under Moritz Haupt and Otto Jahn until 1851, spent six months in Berlin (chiefly to attend Bockhs lectures), and completed his university studies at Leipzig (1852). The next three years were devoted to travelling in Belgium, France, Italy and Greece. In 1856 he became a Privat-docent, and in 1858 extraordinary professor at Leipzig; in 1861 professor of philology and archaeology at Tubingen; in 1864 professor of classical antiquities at Zurich; in 1869 at

BURTON, Sir Richard Francis Burton, Sir Richard Francis. Born March 19, 1821 in Torquay, Devonshire,England. Died October 20, 1890 in Trieste, Austria Hungary. http://michaelroth.tripod.com/bio034.htm
Extractions: Born: March 19, 1821 in Torquay, Devonshire, England Died: October 20, 1890 in Trieste, Austria- Hungary His penchant for exploring, his talent with language and his curiosity for foreign customs, particularly sexual ones, combined to make Sir Richard Francis Burton a fascinating man and writer, but one who often offended the Victorian sensibilities of his contemporaries. Burton, although born in England, was raised in numerous European towns and received an irregular education. He had a reputation as one of the best swordsmen in Europe, and was known for his experience with alcohol and prostitutes. By the time he entered the University of Oxford, he could already speak Italian, Greek and Latin, and continued on to learn Arabic on his own initiative. Although popular with his peers, Burton disliked England and was expelled from Oxford for a breach of conduct in 1842. At this point he joined the eighteenth regiment of the Bombay Native Infantry, where his proficiency with languages facilitated his rise through the ranks, and his acquisition of more than twelve additional languages. Over the years he became fluent in twenty-five languages and fifteen dialects. He worked in Sind, India for seven years, learning many native customs and eventually adopting several Islamic principles. Burton documented his experiences when he returned to England in 1846 after contracting cholera, but the books sold poorly, possibly due to their encyclopedic style. Burton introduced many issues foreign to Victorian England and emphasized that Western culture could learn the practices of others; however his writings on Eastern and African cultures could at times be quite disparaging.
