Statement of Purpose: The Celebration of Women Writers recognizes the contributions of women writers throughout history. Women have written almost every imaginable type of work: novels, poems, letters, biographies, travel books, religious commentaries, histories, economic and scientific works. Our goal is to promote awareness of the breadth and variety of women's writing. All too often, works by women, and resources about women writers, are hard to find. We attempt to provide easy access to available on-line information. The Celebration provides a comprehensive listing of links to biographical and bibliographical information about women writers, and complete published books written by women. (See What's New!

Extractions: Failed auction of anti-Semitic book causes controversy in British Jewry By Richard Allen Greene LONDON, June 6, 2001 (JTA) A controversial Victorian manuscript widely described as anti-Semitic failed to sell this week when it was put up for auction at Christie's in London. The result of Wednesday's auction was both disappointing and humiliating for the Board of Deputies of British Jews , the umbrella organization that sought to sell the document after suppressing it for nearly 100 years. The board's decision to auction the manuscript, "Human Sacrifice Among the Sephardine [sic] or Eastern Jews," by the 19th-century explorer Sir Richard Burton, provoked a furious reaction from leading members of Britain's Jewish community. Lord Janner, a former president of the Board, said it was "immoral to propagate pornography and this is worse than pornography." He called the decision to "seek to sell a viciously anti-Semitic document was a grotesque error."

Extractions: There were Earls of Arundell. The Earls of Arundell before the Conquest are somewhat lost in the mists of antiquity, and they do not affect the branch of the family from which Lady Burton sprang. This branch traces its descent in a straight line from one Roger de Arundell, who, according to Domesday , had estates in Dorset and Somerset, and was possessed of twenty-eight lordships. The Knights of Arundell were an adventurous race. One of the most famous was Sir John Arundell, a valiant [Page 4] commander who served Henry VI. in France. The grandson of this doughty knight, also Sir John Arundell, was made a Knight Banneret by Henry VII. for his valour at the sieges of Tiroven and Tournay, and the battle that ensued. At his death his large estates were divided between the two sons whom he had by his first wife, the Lady Eleanor Grey, daughter of the Marquis of Dorset, whose half-sister was the wife of Henry VII. The second son, Sir Thomas Arundell, was given Wardour Castle in Wiltshire, and became the ancestor of the Arundells of Wardour.
