Extractions: Louisa May Alcott Laura Benet Judy Blume Frances Hodgson Burnett ... Mary Elizabeth Mapes Dodge Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) was an American author. Her best-known book, Little Women (1868-1869) tells the story of four sisters growing up in a New England town during the mid-1800's. Alcott also worked to gain voting rights for women and was active in the temperance (antidrinking) movement. Alcott was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, but she grew up in Boston and Concord, Massachusetts. Her father, Bronson Alcott, was a philosopher and educational reformer. The family's friends and neighbors included the writers Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry David Thoreau. William Ellery Channing, a prominent Unitarian minister, was also a friend. All these people influenced Alcott and helped form her ideas about politics and social reform. Alcott spent most of her childhood in poverty because her father invested in many idealistic projects that failed. At an early age, she began to help support the family by working as a seamstress, a household servant, and a teacher. Her first book, Flower Fables (1854) consisted of fairy stories she made up to tell one of her students.

The magic lantern and Uncle Tom's Cabin Perhaps because of its strong story-line, clear morality, and the good central child character, Eva St. Clair, the American abolitionist novel Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe (first serialized 1851-52) was soon pirated and abridged to become a children's classic. Although the book presents both African-American and white characters through melodrama and stereotype, the novel has received increasing critical reappraisal in recent years. Extractions: Frances Hodgson Burnett Frances Eliza Hodgson was born in Manchester, England, on November 24, 1849. Her mother moved to Knoxville, Tenessee in 1865. Miss Hodgson began writing for magazines soon after. Her first widely-known story appeared in "Scribner's Magazine" in 1872. Frances married Dr. L. M. Burnett of Washington D.C. in 1873. In 1898 she divorced Dr. Burnett and married Mr. Stephen Townsend in 1900. Her reputation as a novelist was made with her story of Lancashire life, That Lass o' Lowrie's . A number of other works followed, with Through One Administration and A Lady of Quality as the most notable. In 1886 she published the Little Lord Fauntleroy Secret Garden and Sara Crew (later rewritten to become: A Little Princess) are what she is best known for today, but her romance novels were very popular during her lifetime. A Lady of Quality , available on-line, has a surprising plot twist, one totally unexpected for that era. Don't click HERE if you plan to download and read the book. It would ruin the fun. Extractions: FRANCES ELIZA HODGSON BURNETT Author 1849 - 1924 "With the best that I have in me I have tried to write more happiness into the world." In 1879, Swan Moses Burnett was appointed Professor of Ophthalmology and Otology at Georgetown University. Born in 1847 (1848 according to Hirschberg), in Newmarket, Tennessee, Burnett obtained his M.D. from Bellevue in 1870 (and twenty years later a Ph.D. degree from Georgetown University). After a short time under Herman Knapp, Burnett returned from New York to set up practice in Knoxville. But after a few years, following the custom of his day, he sought continuing medical education in Paris and London (1875/76) and finally removed to Washington in 1876, where he opened his practice for eye and ear diseases. His marriage to author Frances Eliza Hodgson ended in divorce. He later married Margaret Brady of Washington. Little Lord Fauntleroy Suit Her later books include Sara Crewe (1888), dramatized as The Little Princess (1905), and The Secret Garden (1909), both of which were also written for children. The Lady of Quality (1896) has been considered the best of her other plays. These, like most of her 40-odd novels, stress sentimental, romantic themes. In 1893 she published a memoir of her youth, The One I Knew Best of All. From the mid-1890s she lived mainly in England, but in 1909 she built a house in Plandome, Long Island, NewYork, where she died on October 29, 1924. Her son Vivian Burnett, the model for Little Lord Fauntleroy, wrote a biography of her in 1927 entitled The Romantick Lady.
