Day by day she groped and stumbled her way to the jail where her father was to spend thirteen years, supplementing the wretched prison fare with whatever food she could carry. Bunyan was haunted by what might befall her in a cruel world. If he died in prison, who would look out for her? How could a penniless blind woman survive? Already the shock of his sudden imprisonment had caused his wife Elizabeth to miscarry. Seeing his agitation, prison authorities informed him that he need not remain in jail; in fact, he could go home that afternoon. All he had to do was sign a paper promising never to preach again. Immediately he knew what he head to do: he had been called to preach and would no nothing else. Discharged from the Parliamentary Army, Bunyan returned to the family trade of tinker. (Tinkers were blacksmiths who worked in assorted metals from heavy iron to kitchen cooking utensils.) One morning, looking as usual for business from homemakers, he came upon three or four poor women who were resting briefly from their domestic responsibilities. Bunyan sidled closer and found them talking earnestly to each other. "They talked of how God had visited their souls with his love in the Lord Jesus. . . ." Bunyan later reported. "They spake as if joy did make them speak . . . they were to me as if they had found a new world." And so they had. Upon his release from prison he drafted the masterpiece which was to be a trophy of Puritan thought and a classic of English literature. Who will ever forget the characters from

There is no proof that any memorandum or notes of this sermon was found in the autograph of the preacher. GEO. OFFOR. Mr. Bunyan's Last Sermon 'Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.' John 1:13 The words have a dependance on what goes before, and therefore I must direct you to them for the right understanding of it. You have it thus: 'He came unto his own, and his own received him not; but as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh - but of God.' In the words before, you have two things. First , Some of his own rejecting him, when he offered himself to them.

Bunyan wurde am 28. November 1628 als Sohn eines Kesselflickers in Elstow bei Bedford geboren und ging bei seinem Vater in die Lehre. Im Englischen Bürgerkrieg kämpfte der 17-Jährige in der Revolutionsarmee. Um 1648 heiratete Bunyan Margaret Bentley , eine erklärte Anhängerin des Puritanismus , woraufhin auch er konvertierte. Von großem Einfluß war auch die Lektüre des "Kommentars zum Galaterbrief" von Martin Luther . 1655 wurde Bunyan Laienprediger in einer Gemeinde von Nonkonformisten in Bedford. Als Laie geriet er schnell mit den geweihten Priestern in Konflikt. Seine wichtigsten theologischen Aussagen jener Zeit erschienen 1659 als "The Doctrine of the Law and Grace Unfolded" . Nach der Wiedereinsetzung von König Karl II. 1660 verloren die Puritaner das Recht auf freie Ausübung ihres Glaubens; da Bunyan seine unerlaubte Predigertätigkeit trotzdem fortsetzte, mußte er von 1660 bis 1672 ins Bedforder Bezirksgefängnis.
