A Benedictine cell was founded here at the close of the I2th century by the lord of the manor, Richard Fitz-Roger. His son THOMAS (1744-1779), who succeeded as 2nd baron, played some part in the political life of his time, but his loose and prodigal habits were notorious, and he is known, in distinction to his father " the good lord," as the wicked Lord Lyttelton. He left no lawful issue, and the barony became extinct; but it was revived in 1794 in the person of his uncle WILLIAM HENRY, ist baron of the new creation (1724-1808), who was governor of S. Carolina and later of Jamaica, and ambassador to Portugal. The new barony went after him to his two sons. The 3rd baron (1782-1837) was succeeded by his son GEORGE WILLIAM LYTTELTON, 4th baron (1817-1876), who was a fine scholar, and brother-in-law of W. E. Gladstone, having married Miss Mary Glynne. He did important work in educational and poor law reform. He had eight sons, of whom the eldest, CHARLES GEORGE (b. 1842), became 5th baron, and in 1 Sir Thomas (or Thomas de) Littleton, the jurist, had three sons, William, Richard and Thomas. Extractions: ublic and critics alike responded positively to The Coming Race , "Bulwer's cautionary romance about an advanced society in the earth's interior" (Campbell 125), not knowing that the author of the Blackwood's volume (published in the spring of 1871) was Bulwer-Lytton: the dystopian adventure went through five editions in its first year of publication. The Gulliveresque narrator, an American named "Tish" who describes the utopian achievements of Vril-ya society, is a satirical device for revealing "what Bulwer believes to be an inconsistency in the American national charactera fondness for social rank and a penchant for democratic leveling" (127). The story probably influenced H. Rider Haggard's King Solomon's Mines (1885) in the long term, and provoked an immediate and antithetical response in Samuel Butler's idealistic Erewhon The judgment of posterity places Bulwer-Lytton in the second rank of England's nineteenth-century novelists, below

He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. Bulwer-Lytton achieved an extraordinary contemporary reputation as a novelist. Some of his best known novels are 'Eugene Aram', 1832, The Last Days of Pompeii, 1834, Rienzi, 1835, Zanoni, 1842, Harold, 1848, and Kenelm Chiullingly, an autobiographical novel, 1873. Bulwer-Lytton entered politics early in life and became a Member of Parliament in 1831; he was made a baronet in 1838, and was appointed Colonial Secretary in 1858. In 1858, Governor James Douglas named the town of Lytton as a mark of respect for Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton. Sir Edward was the Secretary of State for the colonies and was very interested in the colony of British Columbia. Sir Edward died in Devonshire, Jan. 18, 1873. Some of his historical novels, especially the Last Days of Pompeii, are still widely read. Custodial hist: Lord David Cobbold has custody of the album, and has provided the Lytton Museum and Archives with the copies of the contents. On March 15, 1999, the Lytton Archives received the photographs from Lord David Cobbold, great-great-grandson of Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton. These photographs were copied from an album received by Bulwer-Lytton in 1865, a presentation for the occasion of the naming of the town of Lytton. The original album is in the archives of Knebworth House, Herfordshire, England.
