    Extractions: This was, and is, Boswell's masterpiece and undoubtedly one of the greatest biographies, if not books, ever written. The first edition was published on May 16, 1791 in two volumes quarto. A supplementary volume was added in 1794, to be followed almost immediately by a second edition in three volumes octavo,which did not properly incorporate the additional material. The third edition, with all the new materials finally included in their proper places, was completed by Edmond Malone after Boswell's death and published in four volumes octavo in 1799, but it is the fourth edition, published in 1804 under Malone's personal supervision, which is generally accepted as the first accurate and comprehensive version. Malone (1741 - 1812) was a friend of both Johnson and Boswell and a member of The Club. He was the first great Shakespearean editor and also helped Boswell considerably with the preparation of both The Tour of the Hebrides and the Life The next edition of note was the famous, or infamous, one produced by Croker in 1831 and excoriated by Macaulay in one of his much re-printed essays. Then came the attractive Napier edition of 1884, which added to the four volumes of the

Boswell's mother, Euphemia Erskine, was descended from a minor branch of Scottish royalty. His family had had for two-and-a-half centuries as its seat the estate of Auchinleck in Ayrshire. Near the new mansion were the ruins of the Old Castle, which he eagerly showed to Johnson and other friends. Much of his life Boswell was plagued by his mother's suffocating Calvinism and his father's coldness.     Extractions: Biographer and traveller. Born in Edinburgh, the son of the prominent advocate Lord Auchinleck, Boswell was educated at the Universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Utrecht. Although a lawyer by profession, Boswell travelled widely in Europe and is noted for his accounts of these journeys written in his distinctive style. Perhaps his best known work described his travels with Dr. Samuel Johnson to the Scottish Highlands and Islands. On the death of his father in 1782, Boswell inherited the family estates at Auchinleck, East Ayrshire and he moved there to become a capable and well-liked Laird. He spent much of his time there writing the biography of his friend and mentor Johnson, which was published in 1791.

    Extractions: James Boswell Chronology Year Event Commentary James is born in Edinburgh on October 29; his father is Alexander Boswell, who has been a member of the Edinburgh Faculty of Advocates since 1729; his mother is Euphemia Erskine, daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel John Erskine, Deputy Governor of Stirling Castle. At the age of 5, James is begins his education at James Mundell's private academy in the West Bow, Edinburgh; for some reason, James takes poorly to Mundell's academy, developing a severe psychosomatic illness. James's father, Alexander, becomes laird of Auchinleck in Ayrshire, and the family moves there; the family hires as tutor John Dun, who was a capable teacher, whose curriculum included a wide range of literature, and who helped the young James master Latin. John Dun is appointed minister of Auchinleck (through the patronage of Alexander Boswell), and is replace as the boys' tutor by one Joseph Fergusson, who appears to have been something of a failure as a minister; the young James Boswell finds him "completely uncongenial". William Robertson According to Alexander "Jupiter" Carlyle, "I went to the Logic class taught by Mr. John Stevenson, who, though he had not pretensions to superiority in point of learning and genius, yet was the most popular of all the Professor on account of his civility and even kindness to his students, and at the same time the most useful; for being a man of sense and industry, he had made judicious selection from the French and English critics, which he at the morning hour of eight, when read with us Aristotle's

After education at a private school, Edinburgh University and Glasgow University, he practised law in the capital city. Boswell longed to live in London and moved there in 1760. It was in London in 1762 that Boswell first met Dr. Samuel Johnson. Boswell was fascinated by the mind of Johnson. He persuaded Johnston to make a tour of Scotland with him and the two men visited Auchinleck in 1773 on their return from the Hebridean Tour. On the death of his father in 1782, James Boswell inherited the family estates at Auchinleck. He moved to Auchinleck where he became a capable and well-liked Laird. For many years Boswell worked on his famous works "Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides, 1785", and "Life of Johnson 1791". Both works received critical acclaim and throughout the 19 th century Boswell's name was famous for producing these works. James Boswell died in London in 1795 a few years after the publication and success of "Life of Johnson".
