Forti scrupoli morali lo portano a meditare persino la distruzione del Decameron Inferno Stanco, malato e angustiato dalle solite ristrettezze economiche, si ritira a Certaldo, dove muore il 21 dicembre 1375, un anno e mezzo dopo il suo amico Petrarca. Nel 1600 Agostino Della Chiesa "stabilì" che il paesino di cui si parlava nel Decameron, fosse Villanovetta. Di lei si parlò e si scrisse molto: Tommaso III di Saluzzo ne riporta alcune doti: Papa Pio II in alcune lettere di famiglia, riferite ad un matrimonio, indica le migliori virtù di una sposa in quelle di Griselda. Tra il 1400 e il 1600 venne proposta su molte scene teatrali ( anche di Parigi). Un dipinto del saluzzese Luigi Vacca era sul sipario del vecchio teatro di Saluzzo. Tra i tanti che ne scrissero, il Cattaneo fu forse colui che seppe al lettore "toccare" di più il cuore "…questa fanciulla che si chiamò Griselda, è fama che vivesse in Villanovetta, e fosse figlia di un certo Gianucolo, uomo che non aveva altro al mondo tranne le sue braccia ed una meschina capanna. Or venne che il Signor di Saluzzo, il notissimo Gualtiero che menava vita libera per la grande ragione, diceva egli, che non era a contare sulla stabilità delle donne, le quali nubili ancora prometton bene, fatte mogli diventano il tormento dei poveri mariti, e d’altra parte veniva dai cortigiani caldamente stimolato a torsi moglie, un bel giorno, recandosi a caccia pei boschi, capitò ad una fonte nei pressi di Villanovetta. La figlia di Gianucolo, la virtuosa e timida Griselda stava là appunto, intenta più che mai, a diguazzar pannilini, allorché il marchese sopraggiunto allora allora, e rapito da quella celeste figura, poiché disse "mi vogliono ammogliato, sarò tale, e la mia scelta è già fatta".

Nowele te są połączone w całość i są opowiadaniami grupy młodych kobiet i mężczyzn, kt³rzy podczas zarazy schronili się w okolicach Florencji. Wśr³d nowel przeważa tematyka miłosna. Ich charakter jest zr³Å¼nicowany. W swym dziele Boccaccio opisuje wielką "komedię ludzką".
