It was the year of what was called the « Caxton Celebration », marking the fourth centenary (as is was then believed) of the first printing in England by William Caxton. The celebration took the form of a public exhibition, and the exhibits included not only books, including no fewer than 190 examples of printing by Caxton, but also machines and many of the other artefacts of printing, and examples of what is often known in English as « trade literature » which is not literature at all, but catalogues and samples of the materials from which books are made: printing types, paper, ink and binding materials.
