Extractions: The following lists are being updated constantly. Also note that Nancy Prevost with the aid of a grant from Northwest Foundation has undertaken the task of researching the 1847 migration in depth. If you have information regarding the families of this emigration you are encouraged to contact her at prevost@ieway.com. NOTE: All female members of the emigration are listed by MAIDEN name [if known] even if they were married at the time of the emigration. Abbreviations: 1) Capt. John William Bewley: party consisted of 36 wagons when it started out. Left Independence, MO on May 7, 1847. Capt. Bewley was elected the permanent Captain after a shakedown period of several days. Included in the party were the Isaac Bewley family, the Prettymans, the Youngs, and the Victor Wallace family. Several days out of Independence they were joined by a train of 35 wagons from Oskaloosa and a party of American Fur Company trappers bound for the Lakes. Five months and three days after leaving Independence they had their first view of the Columbia. On Oct 10, 1847 they camped at the mouth of the Umatilla and the next morning the party began to separate and follow different paths. Some of the members of the train chose to go to the Whitman Mission where they became embroiled in the Whitman Massacre [follow the links under Missionaries to learn more about this event]

From Spurgeon's preface: "The reader will please observe that the books most heartily recommended are printed in the largest type with the remarks in italics. Good, but more ordinary, works are in medium type, and the least desirable are in the smallest letter. Thus we hope the eye will be caught at once by volumes best worthy of attention." BERNARD, CHARLES DE, whose full name was PIERRE MARIE CHARLES DE BERNARD DU GRAIL DE LA YILLETTE (1804 1850), French writer, was born at Bcsa.ncon on the 25th of February 1804. After studying for the law, and then taking to journalism, he was encouraged by Balzac (whose Peau de chagrin he had reviewed) to settle in Paris and devote himself to authorship; and the result was a series of volumes of fiction, remarkable for their picture of provincial society and the Parisian bourgeoisie. The best of these are Le Nexud gordien (1838), containing among other short stories Une A venture de magistrat, from which Sardou drew his comedy of the Pommes du voisin; Gerfaut (1838), considered his masterpiece; Les Ailes dIcare (1840), La Peau du lion (1841) and Le Gentilhomme campagnard (1847). His ~Euvres completes (12 vols.), which appeared after his death on the 6th of March 1850, include also his poetry and two comedies written in collaboration with Léonce (C. H. L. Laurencot, 1805 1862). A flattering appreciation by Armand de Pontmartin is prefixed to Un Beau-père in this collection. In W. M. Thackerays Paris Sketch-book ( On some fashionable French novels ) there is an admirable criticism of Bernard. See also an essay by Henry James in French Poets and Novelists (1884).
