Extractions: Galleries - Burne-Jones: Max Beerbohm's Caricatures Max Beerbohm (1872-1956) was a leading critic, essayist and caricaturist. He was hailed by The Times in 1913 as 'the greatest of English comic artists', by Bernard Berenson as 'the English Goya', and by Edmund Wilson as 'the greatest...portrayer of personalities - in the history of art'. Beerbohm delighted in drawing Rossetti together with the other Pre-Raphaelites and the eccentric artists, writers, models and mistresses that surrounded him: Holman Hunt, Millais, Madox Brown, Ruskin, Morris, Burne-Jones , Swinburne, Meredith, Tennyson, Browning, Whistler, Siddal, Cornforth etc. Examples of two of his caricatures featuring Sir Edward Burne-Jones are displayed below. These watercolour drawings were published in 1922 and remain his most famous caricatures. When the book first appeared The Times commented : 'Each drawing is worth a whole volume of sermons on ideals in art and life... Here is the final criticism of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood'.

He began his literary career with contributions to The Yellow Book, a quarterly magazine. A prominent figure in London life, Beerbohm knew everybody and caricatured everybody, emphasizing the eccentricities of British social, political, and literary personalities in a long series of witty drawings. He was knighted in 1939. Except for his one novel, Zuleika Dobson (1911), a satire on life at the University of Oxford, Beerbohm's books are mainly compilations of his periodical and newspaper articles. He was the drama critic of the Saturday Review from 1898 to 1912, succeeding George Bernard Shaw in the post. Important among these writings are the collections of essays

Part 7: Wilde And The Club Sir Besant notes the great increase in wealth, the expansion of the notion of whatconstituted a gentleman, and Max Beerbohm, (18721956) A Peep into the Past. http://www.nyu.edu/library/bobst/research/fales/exhibits/wilde/6club.htm
Extractions: The gentlemen's club was a focal point of middle- and upper-class masculine privilege in late Victorian England, and Oscar Wilde made it a constant backdrop in his works. By going to his club, the English gentleman could escape the domestic pressures of wife, children, and servants while surrounding himself with men of his intellectual and social rank. The club was, in effect, an exclusive and responsibility-free second homea place to enjoy the power that was one of the special privileges of bearing the title of "gentleman." By the 1880s, the number of men that could be called gentlemen had expanded dramatically. The rank was assigned to any man who had attended public school. This form of masculine privilege thus began within the all-male confines of England's most elite educational institutions, such as Eton or Harrow, and was continued in the rarefied atmosphere of the gentlemen's club. Clubs proliferated during the latter half of the nineteenth-century, and their growing number reflected the growing variation within social strata. As the roles of men and women evolved in the late nineteenth century, gendered spaces such as the club became territory for ideological warfare. Oscar Wilde entered into this warfare by featuring his sexually and morally ambiguous dandies as club frequenters. Wilde himself belonged to over ten different clubs, and it may be remembered that Lord Queensberry s incriminating note accusing Wilde of "posing as a somdomite[sic.]" was left for him at the Albermarle Club.

A caricaturist lavishly feted in his heyday, Beerbohm (1872-1956) deployed his evanescent wit best in prose: Stylistically the missing link between Oscar Wilde and Lytton Strachey, he shot to fame while still an undergraduate. (His 1894 essay "A Defence of Cosmetics," published in the scandalous Yellow Book 's debut issue, was pilloried by critics as the epitome of decadence.)
