Feel free to include YOUR ancestors by emailing Kim Hurricane Cemetery is located about 8 miles south of Charleston, Coles Co, IL on IL State Route 130 and is situated in S18, T11N, R10E in Hutton Township. The earliest burial in this cemetery was reported to have been in 1837. [Source: "The Prairie Sleeps", 1994, Coles Co Genealogical Society, which cited a May 28, 1910 Charleston newspaper article by J.K. Rardin.] The first log Church house for the Hurricane Creek Baptist church was built there in 1837 or 1838, and served its purpose until about 1857 or 1858, when a framed structure replaced it. This Church house was replaced in 1887, and was used until it burned in 1936. The present Church house was built in 1936/7 and is still in use. [Source: Coles Co History Book. She was born November 28, 1914, in Shreveport, La., to the late John and Beulah Palmer Fort. She was a member of Providence Moravian Church and a member of the Rebecca Lodge in Louisiana. She was preceded in death by her first husband, J.B. Gandy; her second husband, J.T. White; a son, Hubert Gandy; and a brother, Stanley Fort. Surviving are two daughters, Jan White Mabe and husband Randy of Winston-Salem, and Betty Gandy Newman of Sucqmish, Wash.; a daughter-in-law, Joan Gandy; a brother, U.S. Air Force Col. Alvin Fort (Ret.) and wife Daphine of El Paso, Texas; eight grandchildren, including Erin Mabe and Kaylon Gandy Gates; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson. Leroy Howell Merritt, 91, of Winston-Salem died November 11 at The Oaks at Forsyth. He was born May 9, 1911, to the late James H. Merritt and Agnes S. Merritt of Chapel Hill. He will be remembered by many people, including professional athletes, coaches and graduates of UNC in Chapel Hill, as he and his wife owned and operated the famous Pines Restaurant in Chapel Hill for many years. After his retirement, he resided in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and with his daughter in Clemmons. When his health precluded independent living, he became a resident of The Oaks at Forsyth. He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Knowles Merritt.

Extractions: April 27, 1854 The first officer killed in the line of duty was Cyrus Beebe. On April 27, 1854, Beebe whose date of entrance to the City Police is unknown, was working with Licking County Officers, who were looking for a William Jones, Alias William Morgan. Jones was wanted by Licking County for burglary and was reportedly hiding out at the Scioto Hotel , in Columbus. When the officers arrived at the hotel, Jones refused to surrender, and a gun battle ensued. Beebe was shot dead by Jones who made his escape into the crowd.

Rankin Papers consist of correspondence, writings, memoranda, diaries, scrapbooks, and photo albums kept by Mr. Rankin which span his lifetime and career as an ambassador. Ambassador Rankin deposited his papers in the Princeton Library in 1973 and then formally donated them in 1977. Processed by Edward J. Jaramillo (Princeton Class of 1996) in 1993 Size: 12.5 Linear Feet (13 archival boxes, 5 oversize boxes) Karl Lott Rankin was born on September 4, 1898 in Manitowc, Wisconsin to Emmet Woollen and Alberta Rankin. He grew up and lived in Topeka, Kansas before attending the California Institute of Technology from 1917-1919. In the 1920-1921 academic year, Rankin studied at the Federal Polytechnic Institute in Zurich. He received his degree in civil engineering from Princeton University in 1922. China Assign ment which discusses his years in Taiwan. Rankin's first wife, Pauline Jordan (they were married in 1925) died in 1976. In 1978, Rankin married Ruth Thompson Garcelon. Rankin died on January 15, 1991 at the age of 92. Ruth Thompson Rankin died on January 27th, 1997, in Punta Gorda, Florida.
