    Extractions: Illustrated by Michael Hague In 1899, after the success of "Mother Goose in Prose" and "Father Goose: His Book," L. Frank Baum wrote "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" for which he received countless rejections from publishers. The book was considered a radical departure from the conventional children's literature of the day. Geo. M. Hill Co., a small Chicago publisher, agreed to publish the book with the condition that L. Frank Baum and W.W. Denslow, the Illustrator, incur all expenses. On August 1, 1900, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" was published and the world was introduced to a new kind of American Fairytale. Children and adults immediately embraced this wonderful story of unlikely friendships, co-operation, bravery and trust and all the inhabitants of Oz: Dorothy, the Tin Woodman, the Lion, the Scarecrow, and the little dog, Toto. By November 1900 the book had already been reprinted twice. Several years later the title of the book was changed to "The Wizard of Oz," which has become a classic American treasure sparking the imagination of millions.

He also wrote under several pseudonyms which follow: Lyman Frank Baum, Floyd Akers, Laura Bancroft, John Estes Cooke, Hugh Fitzgerald, Suzanne Metcalf, Schuyler Staunton, Edith Van Dyne. He spent his childhood living on a luxurious country estate called 'Rose Lawn', his father having made a fortune in the oil fields of Pennsylvania. "He married Maud Gage in 1882, the daughter of a leading suffragette, and the family moved westwards to South Dakota. He worked in the theatre and in newspapers and magazines, he manufactured a patent axle grease called Baum's Castorine, managed a general store called Baum's Bazaar, and was even a poultry farmer. "His first two books retold traditional stories, although the last story in Mother Goose in Prose (1897) introduced the character of a young girl named Dorothy. This led him towards the creation of the land of mystery and delight called Oz, and thus, in 1900, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was born. It was an overnight success, and within two years a stage musical of the book had been produced, with Baum himself writing the lyrics and so fulfilling an earlier ambition to be a playwright. This rejection occurred even after Baum and his illustrator, W.W. Denslow, had produced the best-selling children's book of 1899, a collection of humorous verse entitled Father Goose, His Book. Eventually Baum did find a publisher, and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was an immediate success, spawning a stage play in 1902, 13 sequels between 1900 and his death in 1919, a series of Sunday comic pages, a young readers' series of Oz books and, of course, the classic film of 1939. Success of this magnitude was without precedent in Baum's life: During his adult life, he had relocated from New York to South Dakota to Chicago, working in and starting a number of businesses, each of which fizzled. But with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz he hit upon a winning formula: A child hero leaves home through some accident and finds herself in a fantasy land, where she is guided by a wise parent-surrogate. The painting was made in Southern Illinois by John Winters for the WPA. The painting was owned by the Federal Government and is still in good condition. Its scene is a tornado disaster with the ruins of a house and two figures. It was painted with dark gray colors. Diorama Created by Matt I did the tornado scene from The Wizard of Oz .
