A History Of St Catherine's Rowing 1875-1999 18751900. Extract from Chapter II of A History of St Catherine's Rowing 1875-1999 B. Baker (coach Censor); front C. H. Barber, W. A. Chevalier, L. C. Streatfield. http://www-atm.atm.ox.ac.uk/rowing/rshistory/rshistory_ch2.html
Extractions: Extract from Chapter II of A History of St Catherine's Rowing 1875-1999 [Chapter based on an article by R. J. Stephens which appeared in the Michaelmas 1919 edition of the St Catharine's Magazine] Starting from the very bottom, whilst in the Torpids we were successful in making three bumps against Christ Church II, Hertford and Corpus, in the Eights we were without success. We did not appear for the Torpids of 1877 and so lost our position of the previous year. Better success attended our efforts in the Eights, for we managed to make three bumps against Jesus, Wadham and Hertford. It is interesting to note that when we bumped Hertford, their boat was being blocked by New Coll., which had made a bump previously, and in consequence the latter was fined 5 pounds which the then Vice-Chancellor magnanimously paid out of his own pocket. Our man, J. Lowndes was defeated in the Sculls by T. C. Edwards (BNC). [Footnote: J. Lowndes appears to have transferred to Hertford the following year and won the Diamond Sculls at Henley in 1879, 1880 and 1881, the Silver Goblets (pairs event) in 1882, and the Stewards' (coxless fours) in 1881 and 1882]
