Er war der Sohn von Thomas Arnold , des Schulleiters der berühmten Rugby School . Nachdem er eine Zeit lang in Rugby klassische Philologie unterrichtet hatte, war er von 1851 bis 1886 als Schulinspektor tätig. Da er sich in dieser Funktion mit der Reform des britischen Schulwesens befasste, besuchte er zu Forschungszwecken wiederholt das europäische Festland und unternahm 1883 und 1886 Vortragsreisen in die Vereinigten Staaten. Von 1857 bis 1867 war er in Oxford Professor für Dichtung Ein meditativer, elegischer Ton ist kennzeichnend für Arnolds Dichtung. In vielen seiner Gedichte kommt seine Verzweiflung am Leben und das Gefühl der Isolierung zum Ausdruck, so in den Versen des Gedichtes "Stanzas from the Grande Chartreuse" (1855). Seine Dichtung orientiert sich häufig an klassischen Vorbildern. Zentrale Motive sind Entfremdung, Verzweiflung und innere Leere. Trotz seiner religiösen Zweifel schrieb Arnold mehrere Stücke, in denen er danach strebte, die innere Wahrheit des Christentums gegenüber dem herkömmlichen Dogmatismus nachzuweisen.     Extractions: From Culture and Anarchy Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) was a preeminent poet of the Victorian era, a lifelong educator, a pioneer in the field of literary criticism, a government official (Inspector of Schools), and an influential public figure. But one of his most enduring legacies is his extensive body of writing on the topic of culture. Arnold saw culture"contact with the best which has been thought and said in the world" (cf. "high culture" in the glossary) as the crucial component of a healthy democratic state. Arnold's view of culture as involving such characteristics as "beauty," "intelligence," and "perfection" is a Neoplatonic one that is, it tends to assume that these values exist in the abstract and are the same for all human societies. His argument, then, is openly political: he feels that if more people will share and pursue his notions of beauty, truth, and perfectionof culturethat the world will be a better place. Apr. 15, 1888, was a major Victorian poet, the principal English literary critic of his generation, an important commentator on society and culture, and an effective government official. His father was Thomas Arnold, the headmaster of Rugby School. After graduation from Oxford, Matthew Arnold went to London as a private secretary to a member of the government. In 1851 he was appointed an inspector of schools. For 35 years he visited teacher-training schools to assure that they met government standards. He also visited schools on the continent, writing several reports in which he urged the benefits of state support and centralized supervision of education. Arnold began his literary career in 1849 with a volume of poems, The Strayed Reveller and Other Poems . The title poem of his second volume (1852), "Empedocles on Etna," is a long dramatic poem about the suicide of a 5th-century BC Greek philosopher, who in a changing time no longer believes that his work is making headway against ignorance and confusion. For a time Arnold withdrew this poem because, as he wrote in a preface to his collection Poems (1853), it did not fulfill the inspirational function of poetry. Yet many of his most characteristic poems, including "Dover Beach" and "The Scholar Gipsy," concern the difficulty of confident knowing and acting in an age when conventional ideas and institutions have lost their authority. Arnold wrote little poetry after 1860. His themes, however, and the quiet modulation of his verse, some of it in irregular meters and forms, have made the relatively small body of his poetry of major significance for 20th-century readers.
