Extractions: Louis had long been a favorite name in France, where Clovis I had been founder of the Frankish kingdom. Louis was especially popular as a royal and noble name. It crossed to England with the Normans in 1066 and was Anglicized as Lewis . Both spellings and pronunciations thrived. Louis declined in France after the French Revolution, while, oddly enough, it rose in popularity in England.

Extractions: In 1961, John F. Giblin FRPSL compiled and published "The People on Austrian Stamps", a concise biographical dictionary with 128 biographies of people appearing on Austrian stamps up to 1961. There are two appendices: the first, "Titles of Nobility" explains in detail the complications of Austrian, German and Holy Roman Empire Titles and how they differ significantly from those of the British Crown; and the second, "Military and Naval Ranks" with a tabulated comparison between the Army and Naval services and between British and Austro-Hungarian equivalents. In the introduction the author gives a list of eleven references (in German) from which most of the information could be found. Addenda to the work have regularly appeared in AUSTRIA , and this table contains all of them up to Addendum 202. As JFG has now retired from active authorship, there are unlikely to be any more. The headings (which are repeated at each letter throughout the main table) mean: "No"

These philosophers set the mark of Austrian philosophy, which - negatively put - was Anti-Kantian and never shared the tradition of German idealism. Synthetic judgements a priori unquestionably the basis of Kantianism, were thought impossible and inexistent. Austrian philosophy was empirically-minded, scientifically orientated and sharing in a critique of language. It was active in all the countries of the Danube monarchy. he then might have taken Ernst Mach¡¯s point of view that the world is made out of elements which may be taken either as physical or as psychical according to our perspective. II. This is a vast topic - not to be covered in one lecture, hardly to be covered in a book. The main reasons why this is so are, firstly, that we have to take into account that - like Austrian philosophy -also Austrian literature has taken up its own shape and development. Surely it would be an exaggeration to state that its literature should as rigorously be distinguished from the German literature as Austrian philosophy from philosophy in Germany. If however, one does take into account that geography and politics play their part in the history of ideas, then it is not surprising that an empire that lasted about nine hundred years and which for ages belonged tot he forming powers of Europe (and the new world) will also be a stronghold of its own cultural life. Thus I think this holds in a certain sense also for literature.
