Extractions: James Allen was a great philosopher from Great Britain. The works of James Allen are of great moral value; but, unfortunately, they are not familiar to the people of the modern times as they were to the people of the last century. There is nothing philosophical or religious in James Allen's writings. It speaks of the Truth, only the Absolute Truth. Most of us, we reach a point in life, when we think, what have we achieved so far in life and we want to do something different. James Allen takes a deep look at life, the turmoil a man faces in his life, and the ways to rise above life's difficulties. For starters though it may seem an almost impossible ideal, yet when we make a true attempt to follow the Truth, we see that he shows us the way to mental poise, peace and happiness and the way to attain universal Brotherhood. Extractions: JAMES ALLEN (1864-1912) was an English philosopher whose ideas about living the good life still ring true. Allen was born in Leicester, England. When he was 15, things got difficult for the family as their business failed. His father immigrated to America to see if he could make a new start, but he was robbed and murdered before he could send for his family. He began his day with a walk and meditation, then returned home to write. Afternoons he spent in the garden, and in the evenings he talked quietly with a small group of friends on subjects that ranged from meditation to philosophy to Tolstoy to Buddha. He stressed how thought led to action and spoke of how to turn dreams into reality. His ideas became more reasonable at this time because the liberal Protestant church had discarded the idea of original sin and replaced it with a belief in man's innate goodness, American philosopher, William James, saw this shift as one of the major events of modern time. Although Allen wrote more than 20 books in nine years, he seldom made enough money to cover expenses. His best-known work is As a Man Thinketh in which he tells us how thought leads to action. He shows us how to turn our dreams into realities. He had not planned to publish it but his wife insisted he do so.

Extractions: http://www.painterskeys.com February 19, 2002 Dear Artist, James Allen (1864-1912) of Ilfracombe, England was the granddaddy of the self-improvement industry. His little book "As A Man Thinketh" has gone through multiple printings and translations and has influenced millions, including Norman Vincent Peale, Earl Nightingale, Tony Robbins. His ideas, told mostly through metaphor, can be summed up thus: "The mind is the master weaver, both of the inner garment of character and the outer garment of circumstance, and where they have hitherto woven ignorance and pain they may now weave enlightenment and happiness." He makes the case that men with unwholesome thoughts are not fit for prosperity, creativity, success, or even happiness. And while experience shows us that there are lots of unsavory folks who become presidents of corporations, or even rich artists, he has a message that many artists will intuitively know to be true. Thought and forethought are imbedded in our business. Visualization and imagineering are tools that we lose at our peril. Honesty and childlike purity are our stock in trade. We know that anything that can be conceived can also be accomplished. We know about accentuating the positive and eliminating the negative. Self-employed, self-anointed and self-starting, we know that the building of character and achieving the right mental habits are as important for the serious artist as learning to draw and paint. Many of us have taught ourselves techniques to throw off depression, self-defeat, dry periods, criticism. We have learned how to deal effectively with the tides of disillusionment and even despair. We are a people who build castles in the air, then live in them.
