Extractions: Collaborators on The Tatler and The Spectator Joseph Addison (1672-1719) Addison was born in Milston, Wiltshire and later educated at Salisbury, the Charterhouse, and finally at Queen's College, Oxford. After five years at Oxford, Addison left to travel Europe and earned a reputation as a great gentleman whose only fault was a weakness for wine and an occasional smoke. Finding himself without a job at 33 years old, he was asked to write a poem about the Duke of Marlborough's victory of Blenheim. The poem was so well liked by the Whig party that he was named Vice Commissioner of appeals and later Under-Secretary of State (Gibbs). Joseph Addison died in 1719 and was buried in Westminster Abbey. "It is as a tatler of small talk and a spectator of mankind that we cherish and love him, and owe as much pleasure to him as to any human being who ever wrote. He came in that artificial age, and began to speak with his noble, natural voice. He came, the gentle artist, who hit no unfair blows; the kind judge, who castigates only in smiling," wrote Thackeray in The Coverly Papers.

Light age-yellowing, the odd light browning, foxing and spotting, internally a good copy in contemporary chocolate panelled calf, central darker panel. Spines rubbed, peeling, lacking parts of heads and tailpieces, but sound. Covers, edges and corners similarly rubbed (overall a worn but sound contemporary binding). Contemporary owners inscription of Sir Thomas Rudd. All edges red. First collected edition, it was edited posthumously from Addisons papers by the poet Thomas Tickell, his literary executor who had received instructions for the task. He was educated at Charterhouse, where he was a classmate of Richard Steele, and at Oxford, where he became a distinguished classical scholar. His travels on the Continent from 1699 to 1703 were recorded in Remarks on Italy (1705). Addison first achieved prominence with The Campaign (1704), an epic celebrating the victory of Marlborough at Blenheim. The poem was commissioned by Lord Halifax, and its great success resulted in Addison's appointment in 1705 as undersecretary of state and in 1709 as secretary to the lord lieutenant of Ireland. He also held a seat in Parliament from 1708 until his death. Addison's most enduring fame was achieved as an essayist. In 1710 he began his contributions to the Tatler, which Richard Steele had founded in 1709. He continued to write for successive publications, including the Spectator (1711-12), the Guardian (1713), and the new

Joseph Addison was educated at Lichfield Grammar School. As a young man his literary fame grew rapidly and with his friend Richard Steele, he contributed essays to the 'Tatler' . His later work, the 'Spectator' , containing essays by himself, Steele, Pope, and others, is the most famous and influential of all 18th century magazines. Addison presented the philosophical and literary ideas of his time to a wide audience in an easy, graceful style. In Sir Roger de Coverley, the Tory country squire, Addison created one of the great English comic characters. As well as essays, Addison wrote poetry, political journalism, and a tragedy, 'Cato' , which was one of the most popular plays of its day.
