Adams was born in Boston on September 27, 1722, and educated at Harvard College (now Harvard University). After leaving college in 1740, he was successively a law student, a clerk in a countinghouse, and a merchant. His business failed, and he later became a partner with his father in a brewery. This enterprise also failed after his father died. Meanwhile, he had been an active participant in Boston political circles. In 1756 he was elected tax collector of Boston, a position he held for eight years. His outspoken opposition to strict enforcement of the Sugar and Molasses Act in 1764 brought him into prominence in colonial politics. In 1765, in the course of the controversy aroused by the Stamp Act, he drafted the instructions to the Boston representatives in the General Court, the legislative body of Massachusetts. He was elected to the lower house of the General Court in the same year. The radical majority in the lower house elected him clerk in 1766, and while serving in this position, which he held until 1774, he gradually assumed leadership of the movement in Massachusetts that advocated independence from Great Britain. As such he was a consistent and bitter opponent of Thomas Hutchinson, an aristocratic political leader, who served as the lieutenant-governor of the colony from 1758 to 1771 and as royal governor from 1771 to 1774.

He studied at Harvard College and received his degree in 1743. Following college he began the study of law, but soon gave in to family pressures and took a position as a clerk in the counting house of Thomas Cushing, one of the colony's leading merchants. Adams was not a success in business and worked for Cushing only a short time before beginning his own short-lived venture. In spite of his lack of success at business (failing as a brewer and tax collector and wasting an inheritance), Adams displayed true genius in politics. He excelled at political discourse, writing and strategy. In 1765, Adams was elected to the General Court (legislature) of Massachusetts, representing the town of Boston. Samuel Adams was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. Adams' father was deeply involved in politics and his mother was a deeply religious woman. Adams entered college in the late 1730s and graduated in 1743. Adams was considered a leader because he influenced a lot of people to fight against the British. Samuel Adams helped to defeat the Townshed Act, organized the Boston Tea Party and supported the Continental Congress. Though he was not that successful in business, he stood up for not being taxed without representation. Adams also organized the Sons of Liberty. The Sons of Liberty were a secret organization against the British Colonial Rule. Also the Sons of Liberty organized The Boston Tea Party. In the Boston Tea Party they dressed up as Mohawk Indians, and dumped 17,000,000 pounds of tea into the ocean for a protest against the British. They did this because England raised taxes very high on tea. After the Boston Tea Party Adams fought in the war against Great Britain. After the war Adams signed the Declaration of Independence and was Governor of Massachusetts for 4 years. Samuel Adams shaped America by giving Americans the push they needed to fight against the British, so they would not take over America's land, money, and freedom. Modern day Americans enjoy the benefit of what Samuel Adams did. October 2, 1803 Adams died.
