3-0 out of 5 stars Microbiology with Diseases by Tasonomy: Study Guide
I purchased this book as companion to the text for my Microbiology class at Prince George Community College. Microbiology is definitively the most difficult biology as far as exam preparation is concerned. I was hoping that if I could master the material presented in the study guide and the one in the text it would be enough to ace the class. Unfortunately this was not so. The study guide was not helpful for exam preparation. I give it a rating of 3 because it still helped me some with understanding the material. Realistically the most difficult part of the microbiology class and where you either make it or break it is in the laboratory. If you mess up your unknown and are unable to separate the gram positive from the gram negative bacteria, the laboratory grade will bring your grade down. That happened to me, so the laboratory actually hurt me but realistically even with the study guide and doing all the practice problems in the book I was only able to get over 90 in one exam, all the other exams while still over 80 where not even close. Best of luck to all of you preparing for micro!!!

Vampires are all around-books, movies, TV, comics- infiltrating our culture like never before. But what happens if one should run into a real vamp on the street? Vampire Taxonomy is the best defense against a fatal encounter in the dark. For the reader's protection, Meredith Woerner reveals the truth about:

•Sunlight sensitivity-Do vamps venture out in the day or stick solely to the evening hours?

•Physiology-When ready to feed, do they change appearance or simply lure with the seductive flash of a fang?

•Dress-Are they decked out in leather with aspirations of becoming the first vampire rock stars or do they cling to Gothic robes and ruffled collars?

•Diet-Are they waging a never-ending struggle against the temptation of human blood or do they view the world as their personal blood buffet?

5-0 out of 5 stars A scholarly amalgamation of essays
Martes: Taxonomy, Ecology, Techniques, and Management is a scholarly amalgamation of essays garnered from the Second International Martes Symposium concerning the small North American mammals commonly known as martens or fishers. Individual essays include "Maternal den attendance patterns of female American martens", "Interactions among marten prey availability, vulnerability, and habitat structure", "Improved trapping standards for marten and fisher", "Socio-economic aspects of marten management", and much more. Extensive research, tables, diagrams, and statistics form the foundation of this professional-level species study, intended for fellow experts in the field. "We recommend the following procedures to ensure that disturbance at dens is minimized. Do not approach a den or set up a camera until the female leaves the area. Do not use artificial lighting systems to illuminate the scene. If possible, set up cameras in the opposite direction from which the female leaves the vicinity of the den site. Set cameras and sensors at least 20 m from the den structure. Minimize the number of people involved in establishing the camera station and, to the extent possible, avoid human activity in the immediate vicinity of the den." ... Read more

Product Description
This book deals with the subfamily of honeybees (Apinae), their evolution, ecology and taxonomy at the species and subspecies level. The honeybee, a favorite subject of biological research, is an indisposable element of the ecosystem and an important economic factor in pollination and honey production. In spite of this significance, no general natural history and biogeography of honeybees exists, and taxonomy remains a matter of permanent discussion. This book provides the reader with data on evolution and distribution, ecological adaptation, and geographic variability of honeybees. It gives an overview of comparative behavorial studies, interesting examples of adaptations to various climatic conditions, and the specific requirements of Apis subspecies, which will be of benefit to the future development of apiculture. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Who represents the developing countries?
The quality of the contribitions in this book varies strongly, some are below a minimum level, like the one of Cullen and Walters. What strikes me most, however, is that not one representative of a developing country was invited to participate. Is taxonomy more or less dead there or conservation not a topic? Presumably the Europeans, especially the British, are thought to be able to take care of everything in this field. Sad and stupid arrogance. ... Read more
