5-0 out of 5 stars Oh man what a snooze. But it's the bible on plant physiology.
Any textbook on plant physiology will put even the worst insomniacs to sleep. This one is well written and well organized so it's both really informative and boring. If you keep one reference on your shelf this is the one. It's got it all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Service!
I received the book right when I needed it and the book was in better condition than I expected!I would be more than happy to do business with this seller again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight science, with all the evidence up front.
First of all, I'd like to say what's in this book for anyone wanting to know what they will learn by reading it.

The content of _Plant Physiology_ is not exactly what I was expecting. There was very little about the physical structure of plants: no explanation of sieve tubes, meristems, cortex, cork, flower structure or other elements that one might find in a physical description of plants. The reader's knowledge of those subjects was assumed.Similarly, there was no explanation of the foundational aspects of molecular biology.Again, the authors assume that the reader already understands DNA transcription, meiosis, mitosis, respiration, apoplast and symplast, and other basics of plant biology.

The topics of the chapters are:

Plant Cells
Energy And Enzymes
Water And Plant Cells
Water Balance Of Plants
Mineral Nutrition
Solute Transport
Photosynthesis - The Light Reactions
Photosynthesis - Carbon Reactions
Photosynthesis - Physiological And Ecological Considerations
Translocation In The Phloem
Respiration And Lipid Metabolism
Assimilation Of Mineral Nutrients
Secondary Metabolites And Plant Defense
Gene Expression And Signal Transduction
Cell Walls - Structure Biogenesis And Expansion
Growth And Development
Phytochrome And Light Control Of Plant Development
Blue-Light Responses - Stomatal Movements And Morphogenesis
Auxin - The Growth Hormone
Gibberellins - Regulators Of Plant Height
Cytokinins - Regulators Of Cell Division
Ethylene - The Gaseous Hormone
Abscisic Acid - A Seed Maturation And Antistress Signal
The Control Of Flowering
Stress Physiology

Although the emphasis is on molecular biology in most of these chapters, there are other topics as well.Photosynthesis is well discussed but is also well discussed in other books. However the chapters on water: the physics of how it is passively translocated from root to shoot, how turgor pressure is used to power cell growth, the effects of water stress, and so on, are not explained in the more elementary books I've read, and the extended explanations of plant hormones in the chapters on auxin to abscisic acid are deeper than I have read in more basic books.

The material in the book is supplemented by additional material on the website.Having read all of the web "topics" and "essays", I think I can say that the book stands alone quite well without them.If you are reading without access to the Internet, or don't want to go into greater depth, you don't need to.I found nothing in the book that couldn't be understood without reading the web pages. But the web pages do add depth to the topics they cover.

So much for what's in the book.

Where this book shines in my opinion is in its rigorous adherence to evidence and experiment. The authors never draw a conclusion without explaining the evidence for it.If the evidence is ambiguous, the authors describe the alternative explanations that have been proposed to account for it.The reader never feels that he's simply being lectured in the consensus science. He feels instead that he's being shown the evidence from which the logical conclusions follow. The reader comes away with a good picture of what scientists do and what scientific investigation is like, as well as a deeper understanding of plants.

I learned the answers to many questions that I have wondered about: How is water lifted to the tops of trees? (Passively, by negative water pressure induced by transpiration.)How high can a tree grow? (The limit is in the physics of water pressure.)How do plant cells grow when bounded by rigid cell walls? (Enzymes loosen the "glue" holding cellulose threads together and turgor pressure then pushes them apart.)How do plants survive freezing? (By increasing solute concentration, by translating proteins that prevent ice nucleation, and/or by withdrawing water into the apoplast or the roots.)And so on.

You won't learn everything there is to know about plants from this book. You have to know the basics before you start, and you have to be content with the specific topics of interest to the authors. But the topics that are covered are covered very well and the curious reader will learn a lot.

I'm not a scientist or even a college student, just an old guy with an interest in biology. My background preparation consists of a basic book in plant biology (Raven's), some basic chemistry, and some general biology.

It was enough. If you've got the basics under your belt, you'll be able to understand Taiz and Zeiger's book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Plant physiology
The book is really good; it contains a lot of information, mainly for universitarian studies.
I rate it as really good for anyone who has to sustain vegetal physiology!

5-0 out of 5 stars =)
Thanks for the book.!It was in very good condition, and I received it sooner than the estimated date. =)

5-0 out of 5 stars WAY BETTER THAN THE NEWEST EDITION
I Read both this older edition, and Newest edition which is much more expensive and this older one here is way easier to understand. I understood it better in this older edition compared to the newer one. Everything is explained much better and in an easier way for students like me who hate studying. My mind wanders a lot when reading complicated subjects like this.

I couldnt tell you if there was a big difference it the two editions...but I can suggest that before spending $130 on the new edition, buy this older one and read it twice 2 months before your class begins so that when you do finally get the new edition, you would have 85% better chance than all your fellow classmates in understanding this subject.I was one of three people who passed this class with an A, and the other two students who got an A? Well, one was my lab partner who was failing until she got with me after my orginal lab partner dropped the class after 3 weeks, and the other student was a lady who was taking this course for the second time around because she got a D the last time she took it.She had a headstart.

I did this same thing with Anatomy class and passed with an A, ranking number 1 in class. I remember two students who had low C's in the Anatomy class asked me during finals week, what I was doing, and when I told them I read the text once before starting the class, and read it again when class started, they were actually suprised that we had to read the text!I was like "wow....really?" They said that they didnt read it, because the teacher never ordered us to, so they just went off the notes and lectures.I'd say 80% of the exams were from the books, and the rest from lectures.I studied both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast and accurate
This used book matched the description (slightly in a better shape), and I received what I was expecting. It had a few highlights, and apart from that it was in great shape. Also I received it in two days. I don't think I was expecting to get it that soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the money
This is a great book, it's an international edition so it looks different than the book sold in the campus book stores but it has the same content.I also bought it in paper back verses the bookstores hard cover but at 1/3 the cost I'd much rather have the paper book.I received the book promptly and had great service from the provider also.Overall I would say this is a great way to go and for the price you can even afford to keep it to reference later on in grad school if that is the direction life is taking you. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Book--Waste of money!
I don't recommend this book There are several typos and index problems. Content could be stated better and didn't flow well. I found that researching the internet gave better explanations. This book was a waste of money but it's required for school so I had to purchase.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great professor...poor textbook
I am a current medical student at the University of Connecticut who has been forced to use Berne and Levy to study physiology over the course of the year. While Dr. Koeppen ranks among one of the best professors whom I have ever had, unfortunately, his textbook is one of the worst. It is riddled with a shocking number of errors. These are not your typical run-of-the-mill omissions of "the" or "as," but incorrectly printed EQUATIONS and DESCRIPTIONS. While we were warned about many of these errors, several slipped past the detection of our professors. For example, in the Respiratory Chapter, the entire medical school class memorized an incorrect relationship for spirometry because it was incorrectly stated in the chapter. If at all possible, use an alternative reference for your physiology course. If you are taking a physiology course, you likely have enough to worry about- you don't need to worry about whether the information you are reading is correct.

4-0 out of 5 stars required reading
this book was required reading for my class. The content was up to date when I read it, but the presentation is not the best. It's a difficult book to read.I would not have purchased it if it was not required for the course.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money, and Purchase Guyton!-Its Horriable
Where do I start?

Lacks the basic diagrams needed to understand important concepts, the diagrams that are availabe are very confusing and unclear.
Ive had to purchase guyton just to understand whats going on in class, which by the way I wound up getting an A in the end...but only becasue I read from Guyton
Terribly written, confusing to understand.
Very weak in terms of getting the concept across. The writers and the creates need to either A-NEVER EVER WRITE AGAIN, OR B- LEARN HOW TO WRITE AND PUT TOGETHER A PROPERLY THOUGHT OUT TEXTBOOK!

Give me back my money

1-0 out of 5 stars Badly written
This text is so annoying to read. You read a section and you think: why did they write it so difficult. It could be written so much more straight-forward, but it is not. I recommend Guyton or if you can find Berne-Levy's 4th edition which is much better. Don't waste your time on this one. It is one of those book that will leave you with new gray hair. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't know about the book yet but LOVE Amazon.com!!!
The textbook is for my daughter and is required by her college whether it's "good" or not so the five stars may or may not be warranted. The quality looks fantastic and the atlas that was included is awesome and should be really helpful.But...the issue was that it was suppose to arrive with an interactive CD-Rom, and when I arrived home from work last night around 6:30 the delivered package was damaged and the CD-Rom missing.I panicked because classes have already started and my daughter had already missed two days without her books.

I quickly took pics of the damage and e-mailed Amazon. To my astonishment, the replacement was waiting on my counter this morning before 10:00; my husband delivers for UPS and must have dropped it by while on his route.I have NEVER had a company do that for me so I need to say that Amazon.com is AMAZING!Though I've been an Amazon customer for a while, I want you to know that you have a customer for life!Thank you so much for the remarkable customer service and dedication. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This book is a great "at your fingertips" resource. It has all the basic details of many of the systems which keeps me from having to thumb through my mammoth-sized A&P book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kevin Pattons Survival Guide for Anatomy & Physiology
The book lends itself to assuring the student of anatomy, no matter how new or experienced, a sense of accomplishment. My experience when teaching anatomy is that many students feel immediately overwhelmed no matter which text is used. This handbook seriously offers reason while encouraging critical thinking and drawing you into whatever text you are using. It is not simply a "Notes" or "dummies" book. Rather it is a finely tuned version of A&P that every student of anatomy should have at their side with the text and their dissector. For others taking a "short" course, this would definitely provide much better understanding for application.

Hassle-free, no worries transaction.Book came in fantastic shape, and was so cheap! Thanks a bunch!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I took this for the pre-paramedic Anatomy and Physiology class, and then I went on to the full pre-nursing anatomy with lab and physiology with lab classes. This was an excellent book for whatever your goals may be. I went back to it much later, having learnt more about the topics, and was impressed by how succinct, accurate and relevant is the material. It's hard to pick what aspects need to be covered for the book's audience, and and the authors have done a commedable job of understanding their customers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great service.
I recieved my book within a couple of days, just in time for my class. It has some highlighting, but its all the key points I need.
Thanks for sending it so quickly and pricing it so well.

5-0 out of 5 stars basic intro to anatomy
I am currently an anatomy student and this book is a great extra tool to have on hand! I also have an anatomy book and a few other resources, but sometimes they can be too vague or in depth. This book is a wonderful supplement to any anatomy course. It will not get you through a course mind you, but if you're interested in seeing something that is similar to what you would in a regular anatomy course its a wonderful introduction! It's easy to read and it has pretty good graphics.

Product Description

This uniquely readable, compact, and concise monograph lays a foundation of knowledge of the underlying concepts of normal cardiovascular function.Students welcome the book's broad overview as a practical partner or alternative to a more mechanistically oriented approach or an encyclopedic physiology text. Especially clear explanations, ample illustrations, a helpful glossary of terms, tutorials, and chapter-opening learning objectives provide superb guidance for self-directed learning and help fill the gap in many of today's abbreviated physiology blocks. A focus on well-established cardiovascular principles reflects recent, widely accepted cardiovascular research.

The supplemental CD-ROM is an interactive, dynamically linked version of the book, which is organized by normal cardiovascular function and cardiac disease. Students may begin a path of questioning with, for example, a disease condition and then pursue background information through a series of links. Students can also link to the author's regularly updated Web site for additional clinical information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I purchased this book to help me review for the cardiology section of first-year physiology course in veterinary school. Although the book focuses on the human heart, it has great descriptions of ion-channels, vector-loop diagrams, the cardiac cycle, neurohumoral regulation, and more with review questions for each chapter to help you learn the material. My only complaint is that the images are not in the beautiful coloring seen on the front cover but are primarily grayscale with a few red lines throw in. Regardless, the text and figures included were immensely helpful in improving my understanding of te material. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I am a professor in Physiology and this book will be very helpful in my classes, specially the animations which can make the learning process much easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I've ever read
The best book in this area. It has everything you need to know in respiratory physiology and some basic principles are also useful in cardiovascular physiology. The organization is perfect, the thought questions and the questions at the end of each chapter are very well elaborated, you need to think to answer them and apply what you have read, not just memorization. The writing style is also very good, conversational. And I don't have words to describe the CD, is also perfect, the animations are extremely helpfull. If all medical books were organized like this book, no one would need to go to medschool.

ATTENTION! The CD does not work on Windows Vista.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasure to Read
