3-0 out of 5 stars An okay neurophysiology text, particularly lacking in neuroanatomy.
This text does a great job of providing introductory material on the neurophysiology and basic science aspects of neurobiology. It does not, however, provide much depth in terms of the neuroanatomical aspects of neurobiology and could use more incorporation of clinical neurology to add more interest.

If one is looking for a text that provides a solid introduction to the fundamental basis of neuroscience, this text is more than adequate. It is a succinct read and has great (though not flashy) figures that complement the text well. ... Read more

Product Description

Although our knowledge of mood disorders in general is expanding steadily, comparatively little is known about bipolar depression in particular. This book brings together leading clinicians and preclinical and clinical researchers to offer the most up-to-date information about the diagnosis, treatment, and research surrounding bipolar depression.

Early chapters provide valuable diagnostic information, and review the course, outcome, and genetics of this highly heritable condition, allowing clinicians to distinguish between the various mood disorders. The book offers a thorough and unique overview of the neurobiology of the disorder, including what is known from recent neuroimaging work. Several chapters delineate the treatment of bipolar depression in special populations such as children and pregnant women, and another chapter addresses the particular issues of suicide, focusing on the need for assessment during both acute and maintenance treatment with interventions appropriate to a patient's symptoms and history. Finally, the book covers acute and long-term treatment strategies for bipolar depression, including both traditional and novel therapeutics for the disorder, as well as non-pharmacological treatments.

This book has assembled a widely respected group of preclinical and clinical researchers who bring their expertise to bear upon this illness. It offers researchers, clinicians, and postgraduate students key insights into this devastating disorder.

4-0 out of 5 stars A new paradigm for relationships
Louis Cozolino's work is a masterful blending of brain functioning and human relationships. His insights provide a new understanding of human relationships and how they are shaped through brain functioning. The new understanding has led to a reworking of what we assumed we knew about the brain and its functioning. Louis himself has commented that he is learning how much of what he had earlier been taught about the brain was wrong. His work makes the topic very understandable and entertaining. I was fascinated with his insights concerning human relationship that are emerging from the studies done on the brain. As a marriage and family therapist, I found the work well worth the read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent addition to the child development and disorders literature
As a clinician working with children--especially children who have developmental issues, maltreatment issues, neglect, foster care and adoption, and other complicated issues; I found the book to be a clear, comprehensive, and excellent addition to the literature about childhood development. It offers cutting edge information about attachment and development, as well as a perspective that explains much of what can go wrong, and why. It should be required reading for ANY child specialist--in education, health, or other related professions. Excellent. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Brain Needs Your Brain: " It is the power of being with others that shapes our brains."
In this book, Dr. Cozolino presents the brain as a social organ. He asserts that just as neurons need each other to grow and thrive through neural communication, our brains themselves need other brains, as they influence our brains' development and their capacity to learn, to adapt, and to heal throughout life. The brain is shaped by relationships throughout life. Indeed, "the brain is a social organ built through experience." Before purchasing this book, I expected the author to explore the parts of the brain that regulate social interactions. He exceeded my expectations.

This is a tremendously informative book for neuroscientists, psychiatrists, and for the layman. It suggests that neuroscientists adopt a social perspective in studying the brain. It lays out for psychotherapists a new approach to successful psychotherapy, which incorporates authentic relationships with their patients. It counsels parents to develop healthy relationships with their children, for the quality of parenting and early relationships leave an indelible mark on their children's brains. It emphasizes the importance of healthy relationships for the well-being of our brains.

The first part of the book, The Emergence of Social Neuroscience, coins the concept of the" social synapse". The author claims that as neurons communicate across synapses, people communicate across the social synapse. It is through this social synapse that we impact each other's neurobiology and, as a result, each other's behaviors. Our survival is contingent upon bridging this social synapse daily.

The second part, The social brain: Structures and Functions, explores the structures and systems that participate in the social functions of the brain. Specifically, it explores the cortical and subcortical structures, the sensory, motor, and affective systems, and the regulatory systems.
The third part, Bridging the Social Synapse, discusses experience-dependent plasticity, which means that our brains are able to organize and reorganize themselves (to change themselves) as we interact with our environments. Thus our brains change themselves to meet our needs.

The fourth part, Social Vision: The Language of Faces, explains the influence of gaze and facial expression on the social brain. In fact, "eye gaze plays a central role in social communication: It provides information, regulates interactions, expresses intimacy or threat, exercises social control, and facilitates coordination and cooperation." This part also expounds on the power of a pretty face.

The fifth part, Disorders of the Social Brain, explores social cognitive disorders (Autism and Asperger's Syndrome) and other social disorders (borderline personality disorder, psychopathy). It examines dysfunctional structures and/or systems of the brain that cause these disorders.

The sixth part deals with the power of loving relationships in healing an ailing brain, in changing behaviors that have been instilled by a long history of abuse. The author revisits the "components of psychotherapy that optimize neuroplasticity," thereby optimizing healing.

The mother-child relationship is a recurring theme that captures my attention and my imagination. The author presents a mother as a key player who has an extensive impact on her child's brain's plasticity and growth. The behavior and psychology of an adult is related to the quality of the mother-child relationship. He goes through several examples of how a dysfunctional mother-child relationship plagued the child's behavior. Upon reading this I started thinking about orphans and abandoned children in impoverished regions of Africa infested with war and diseases. In keeping with the arguments of Dr. Cozolino, I understand why these children have a delay in their development compared with children of the same age in Europe or America.

The section addressing the power of a beautiful face was very interesting to me. It was shocking to read that even the mother-child relationship is affected by the attractiveness of the child. Attractive children are treated better. The author mentions that the way we are treated is affected by how we look.Attractive people are afforded better jobs and are more likely to get their way, even in the court room. I personally have found myself subdued by an attractive face many times. This is because the sight of an attractive face activates the reward circuitry in the brain. I think we should learn to fight these natural inclinations for the sake of fairness and good judgment in many situations in life.

Professor Cozolino's emphasis on social neuroplasticity is a significant transition in the book. Actually, after reading about the long-lasting impact of the mother-child relationship, parenting, and early interactions on the behavior of a person as an adult, it is refreshing to read about the ability of the brain to transcend the hamstringing trauma of a troubled childhood, and to learn not to fear, to learn to love, as it is transformed loving relationships. Toward the end of this book I was looking for a testament of the power of the human mind, evidence that although one may have had an alcoholic mother, or a neglectful father, one can decide to negate all the bad memories, and take control of one's life. The author refers to this as "autonomic reversal." I was glad to read this.

The book exceeded my expectations as it examined the brain as a social organ. It explores different aspects of the social brain and stresses the power relationships have to shape the social brain. It demonstrates this power through the most basic relationship at the beginning of life: the mother-child relationship. Everyday we ought to think about how our behaviors influence each other's brains. We ought to be tolerant toward people who are somehow dysfunctional and think about how their childhood might have affected their behaviors. We ought to live a life that promotes each other's brain's growth and health.

This book is definitely worth the time spent reading it. I recommend this to anyone who wants to know about the brain in the social context and reflect on why certain reactions occur, certain fears exist, and certain addictions persist. I recommend it to any parent who is anxious about raising a child the right way. The author uses powerful real-life experiences as a psychotherapist to support his points.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stimulating and informative read!
Excellent highly readable scientifically based argument for the power of human relationships in shaping the brain, and thus, individuals across the lifespan. As a psychotherapist and long-time member of a Twelve-Step program, I better understand the notion of self-help groups reshaping and healing the malleable brain.Higher Power? It appears that the Group itself truly is the transformative Power.Feel the love. Thanks, Louis!Terrific!

3-0 out of 5 stars Probably not worth the price for me
This volume gets most of its points for being comprehensive. The idea is nice: 109 (!) short chapters, each briefly summarizing a different research program related to attention.A great way to quickly get a bird's eye view of current attention research. It has some shortcomings, however, and they are hard for me to forgive, given the book's phenomenal cost. Some of the chapters, I feel, are a bit too brief, almost tossed off.Part of the problem may be that I read the book cover-to-cover, when really it's supposed be used as a kind of reference manual/ jumping-off-point-into-the-literature.Used this way, I imagine that the incompleteness of some chapters might be less bothersome.

A more personal criticism is that there are too many fMRI papers.I find it difficult to use fMRI data to constrain or arrive at mechanistic hypotheses about how brains actually work.I can't hold this against the editors (much), because the book's purpose is to represent current research comprehensively, and fMRI is big.Still, if you have as much trouble interpreting fMRI data as I do, it's another reason the book may afford you less than $150 dollars worth of enlightenment.

Finally, it may not be an ideal choice for students, despite a claim to the contrary on the back cover-- the papers can be very terse, and many assume background knowledge that initiates won't have.Still, there probably is not a more complete, up-to-date sampling of current attention research available between two covers, so it MAY be worth having despite it's flaws if you're a neurobiologist/psychologist working in a related field, and you can get someone else to pay for it. ... Product Description

How is free will possible in the light of the physical and chemical underpinnings of brain activity and recent neurobiological experiments? How can the emergence of complexity in hierarchical systems such as the brain, based at the lower levels in physical interactions, lead to something like genuine free will? The nature of our understanding of free will in the light of present-day neuroscience is becoming increasingly important because of remarkable discoveries on the topic being made by neuroscientists at the present time, on the one hand, and its crucial importance for the way we view ourselves as human beings, on the other. A key tool in understanding how free will may arise in this context is the idea of downward causation in complex systems, happening coterminously with bottom up causation, to form an integral whole. Top-down causation is usually neglected, and is therefore emphasized in the other part of the book’s title. The concept is explored in depth, as are the ethical and legal implications of our understanding of free will.

This book arises out of a workshop held in California in April of 2007, which was chaired by Dr. Christof Koch. It was unusual in terms of the breadth of people involved: they included physicists, neuroscientists, psychiatrists, philosophers, and theologians. This enabled the meeting, and hence the resulting book, to attain a rather broader perspective on the issue than is often attained at academic symposia. The book includes contributions by Sarah-Jayne Blakemore, George F. R. Ellis , Christopher D. Frith, Mark Hallett, David Hodgson, Owen D. Jones, Alicia Juarrero, J. A. Scott Kelso, Christof Koch, Hans Küng, Hakwan C. Lau, Dean Mobbs, Nancey Murphy, William Newsome, Timothy O’Connor, Sean A.. Spence, and Evan Thompson.

Product Description

Man has been pondering for centuries over the basis of his own ethical and aesthetic values. Until recent times, such issues were primarily fed by the thinking of philosophers, moralists and theologists, or by the findings of historians or sociologists relating to universality or variations in these values within various populations. Science has avoided this field of investigation within the confines of philosophy.

Beyond the temptation to stay away from the field of knowledge science may also have felt itself unconcerned by the study of human values for a simple heuristic reason, namely the lack of tools allowing objective study. For the same reason, researchers tended to avoid the study of feelings or consciousness until, over the past two decades, this became a focus of interest for many neuroscientists.

It is apparent that many questions linked to research in the field of neuroscience are now arising. The hope is that this book will help to formulate them more clearly rather than skirting them. The authors do not wish to launch a new moral philosophy, but simply to gather objective knowledge for reflection.

I'd been so used to psychological texts falling into 2 distinct categories: texts written by MD's explaining how everything wrong with you involves an excess of seratonin (or some other chemical) or books written by clinicians talking essentially only about their personal clinical experiences. This book breaks (or combines maybe..?) these stereotypes in a readable, detailed, and very well-supported (~500 references) account of how experiences actually create biological malfunctions.

A brief note to other readers who might also not be mental health professionals: While this book doesn't really assume you know anything at all, it can be dense at times. However, Dr. Siegel goes out of his way to make sure that you can follow along by rehashing earlier points that might have been easily confused.

Outlining important points in italics, Dr. Siegel proceeds through the entire range of mental development. He starts out with the more basic processes involved in mental functioning (memory, attachment, emotion, states-of-minds) and shows how these systems are shaped in an infant by a responsive caregiver into forming an emotionally healthy adult. He also talks about how mental disorders can develop when these various systems are either inadequately stimulated or actively stimied.
I found the chapter on attachment particularly remarkable. As he explained the various types of attachments and how they were dependant on parental-child interactions (all backed up, of course, by various clinical data), I felt like I could make sense of some events from my own childhood.

This book should DEFINITELY be read by the hordes of biologically oriented psychiatrists out there. Its also a wonderful read for people who might want some insight into why they've always had problems making friends, controlling their emotions, or repeating the abusive behavioral patterns of their parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellect perspective...
This is a uniquely important book! Maybe those who so vividly expressed their disappointent in their reviews, misunderstood the title! The book is about DEVELOPING MIND, which means about how certain class of brain processes we call 'mind' come into being as the brain rewires itself.

Most of the literature seems to be assuming that these proceses somehow come into being and focus on deciphering their meaning and purpose assuming the 'mind' to be like a computer in the skull we are born with which is ready to use and it is suficient to switch it on.

But clearly, this less ingteresting frame, since the 'mind' never remains the same as a kind of static 'thing.'What is fascinating, is its continuous development process. The book presents very readable explanatory model.Minsky says that "brains use processes that change themselves[...] The principal activities of brains are making changes in themselves."Siegel explains how this happens and this is a fascinating narration.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Understanding of Interpersonal Experience
Siegel writes clearly and accurately. He is passionate about the mind and it's development. This book is written at a college level which means your average reader won't be picking it up. You'll take a grand tour of brain/mind development, memory, attachment, emotion and interpersonal relationships. This is must reading for the clinician and parents who want to do it right. This book deserves 6 stars but there are only five to offer. This was a wonderful read! Kevin Hogan,...

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Stars despite a few flaws
This book is a heavily research based volume detailing the ways in which parenting styles affect brain development, brain wiring structure with the implications for our lives and civilization. Although it's sometimes a bit redundant and disorganized in presentation, the information is potent and important and the quantity of research staggering. This is truly worth reading - for those who may prefer a less academic presentation, try it anyway. The value of this book is extraordinary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent foundation for understanding the brain.
This very well written book outlines how the brain developes and integrates what we know about the impact of life experience with the unraveling mysteries of the brain.Emotional disorders such as PTSD areinformed by Siegel's elegant discussion of how memories are created. Thisis a challenging book; each sentence is packed with important information. While the subject matter may not be familiar to the reader, Siegel presentsthis valuable information in a very accessable manner.Very Stronglyrecommended to therapists and counselors. ... Read more
