It is a nice written and ease read manual. It is still too heavy to carry around, I wonder whether this can be a half-sized book that is printed in smaller fonts. I guess molecular biologists wouldn't care about small size fonts, they deal with small stuff all the time.

There are any number of books on cancer from little phamplets for the new patient to heavy duty books that summarize the current research going on in specialized areas.

This book is aimed at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student with some background in biology. It covers cancer from nearly every aspect. It begins with a general introduction to cancer and its impact from around the world. It goes on to cover the current state of research in every significant area. The writers are a who's who of cancer researchers, where each major subject area is written by a specialist in that area.

The editors are researchers in their own right. They jointly run the cancer research group at the University of Warwick which has produced significant findings. For a book written in this manner, this book is surprisingly well written and understandable. This is the job of a good editor and they have done it well. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Introduction to a Fascinating Subject
Unfortunately, I could not disagree with my fellow reviewer more...

I was introduced to this text while a student in Dr. Malacinski's own molecular biology class at Indiana University. While I learned a great deal from the class itself, I found this book to be utterly disappointing in more ways than one. While he is undoubtedly a great teacher, Dr. Malacinski is a terrible author. His explanations of even the simplest concepts are confusing at best and downright confounding at their worst. Often, the book uses long, languid syntax to explain basic ideas, and in doing so, loses track of the fundamental basis of the concepts it is trying to elucidate. It seems to me as though Dr. Malacinski's purpose in writing an introductory textbook would be better served by offering his readers short, direct, and to-the-point explanations (such as those offered in the "Student Companion.") The trichromatic layout of all the book's diagrams make their interpretation difficult, and do little to provide the reader with relief from the bland nature of the prose. The text's lack of detailed color photographs is equally maddening - more than once when attempting to study one of the book's photographs, I felt as though I were staring at a "magic eye" collage rather than an electron micrograph. Additionally, Dr. Malacinski's attempts of to interject his personal opinions and imbibe his readers with enthusiasm for the subjects being treated feel trite and unnecessary. The text skims over many fundamental issues relevant to the study of molecular biology - most notably in its almost non-existent coverage of proteins and their role in molecular biology. I was equally disappointed in the book's total lack of coverage (or even introduction to) more advanced concepts in the field, particularly eukaryotic molecular biology. Although aptly titled "Essentials of Molecular Biology," students intending to pursue more advanced studies in the fields of biochemistry and molecular/cell biology will be poorly served by the book's complete omission of these advanced concepts. Altogether, while this book is one of the few molecular biology textbooks specifically designed for use in a one-semester undergraduate introductory course, many of the "more advanced" textbooks available provide a more comprehensive and easily understandable treatment of the material covered in this text. To those with a sincere interest in learning about both the concepts and breadth of molecular biology, I recommend "Molecular Biology of the Cell" (4th ed.) by Alberts et al, "Molecular Cell Biology" (4th ed.) by Lodish et al,and "Biochemistry" (5th ed.) by Berg and Stryer as alternatives to this book.

I read this book at the library and was highly impressed with the mode of explaination and representation.The book is highly informative giving the explaination with the best lucid way and the figures too are at the rightplaces.How so ever the book would have been still more better if themethod given at many places would have been clubbed with the major drawbacks and precautionary steps.

I was just browsing a sample on my kindle and this book is terribly hard to read. I am not referring to the content,many characters and sometimes whole words in the text are just impossible to read or too faint. A book in this condition would never be sold in any paper bookstore. Amazon should do something about it.

The book is short compared to the ones published in the same area of research, but it is quite informative and easy to follow. One can find most of the important concepts about polymer physics, but sometimes a secondary resource could be needed. Overall, it is worth the price.

In recent years physicists have been developing a series of statistical tools that help them to understand how large groups of things operate. Even more recently some of these same techniques have begun to be applied to biological concepts and to the modelling of complex biological processes. The techniques use the standard physical concepts of force, energy, and entropy but apply them to life processes.

Dr. Sneppen is a professor of biophysics. He is a theorist who teaches on the physics of biological system and mathematical biology. Dr. Zocchi teaches biophysics at advanced undergraduate and graduate level at UCLA. This book is intended as a text for third or fourth year study in the physics department undergraduate school. It is written from the standpoint of the physicist and should serve as an introduction to the merger of the physical and biological sciences. This older book shows the coherent organization that is the hallmark of one disciplined mind. Although recent editions of Alberts et al and Lodish et al are more up to date, the writing here is more consistent than those committee-written books, and is organized in terms of questions one would naturally ask. Typically I find this a better introduction to topics in cell biology, which hasn't changed as dramatically as genomics over the past 15 years, since this book was written.

I used this book in freshman biology, a course that is required for students in many different majors at my school. I am a chem major, and luckily in highschool had good preparation in molecular biology. That is the only reason I could even read the words in this book. Many of my friends had never taken biology and absolutely hated this book. Its used alot of technical jargon that unless you've taken previous courses, you won't understand. While I wouldn't say that I hated it, its definately not an easy read. Its a very technical book and is not appropriate for students who have never been exposed to molecular biology. I must admit that I found it very dense and hard to read. It gave me headaches to try and understand all the material becasue it was just so dense. Probably a great book for an upper level course (I can't even say if this is true, becasue I never looked at the book again after freshman bio) but avoid it at all costs if you are a freshman or sophomore with no prior training in biology.

I'm a mathematics Ph.D. student who's working in computational oncology, meaning that I study cancer from a mathematical/engineering point of view (conservation of mass, oxygen and glucose transport, etc.) and create computer models for study. This biophysical viewpoint has been fruitful, but I've found that to make further progress, an understanding of the cellular biology is required. Furthermore, a lack of vocabulary makes it difficult to communicate with the clinical/medical community.

That's where this book comes in: it gives a great, expansive overview of cancer that is difficult to come by in the mathematical world. In places, it is perhaps too detail-oriented (which specific proteins do what and how, e.g., in DNA repair), but that's the nature of the beast, and I feel that it's very important for mathematical biologists to be exposed to this. The text gives a good sampling ranging from epidemiology, genetics and epigenetics (gene expression), oncogenes, tumor suppresor genes, DNA repair, cell cycle, and most approaches to therapy.

Because this edition was published in late 2005, it's quite up-to-date, and in that regard, the papers cited are very useful to the student and researcher for further exploration and paper writing. Probably one of the greater weaknesses is in the figures in the earlier genetics sections: the diagrams are not particularly helpful in actually illustrating the complex processes. Overall, though, this has been very helpful for me in bridging the gap between mathematical biology and oncology. This textbook is a combination book, partly the biography of an exceptional individual and partly a history of scientific discovery.The author, William Summers, is eminently qualified to write such a text, beinga physician, scientist, and historian at Yale University.

D'Herelle isa renowned Canadian Scientist about whom I was totally ignorant.Born inMontreal, he traveled and lived in numerous areas around the world,although France became his eventual home.He never gave up his Canadiancitizenship, however.D'Herelle was born to a wealthy family in Montreal,and after high school he traveled extensively, thanks to a gift from hismother.He never found time to return to formal schooling, but he learnedenormous amounts in his chosen field, microbiology.His seminal scientificdiscovery was the description of bacteriophages, and their possibleapplication in human infectious diseases.For this he received numerousawards, and at one time was a research professor at Yale University despitehis own lack of formal education.Dr. Summers clearly delineates theprocess of scientific discovery, and the subsequent controversies over thenature of this new discovery (was it really a living organism or anenzyme?), and the determination of scientific priority.There is a fairamount of technical description, but Dr. Summers is a clear and logicalwriter who is able to guide the reader through the scientificprocess.

This book is an incredible work of scholarship, with extensiveuse of primary source documents. However, because the main thrust of thisbook is one of scientific discovery, we get very little analysis ofd'Herelle's personality.I would have been interested in some speculationon how his lack of formal education might have influenced his often-stormyrelationships with other scientists.Also, why was such a distinguishedscientist so poorly treated at the Pasteur Institute, his spiritual home?There would be much to learn from a biography of this highly complexindividual.Meanwhile, this is an excellent book that helps us understandthe nature of scientific enquiry while saluting an outstanding scientist,who just happens to be Canadian.

This book reviews the life of Felix d'Herelle, the man responsible for the co-discovery, naming, and popularization of bacteriophages, the viruses that infect bacteria. I am a student, so if any professor out there would like to get a student's perspective on this book, here it is: I had many difficulties using this text.The first problem is it is too concise, even for the graduate level chemical thermodynamics class it was being used for.There were many topics that were covered in mere paragraphs, sometimes with no illustrating examples.This made doing homework problems difficult.Next, there was very little application to actual chemistry, so it was hard to put what was being presented into context.Many of the problems are doing mathematical gymnastics, which is a good mental exercise, but applying concepts to chemical systems and perhaps data you might see from an experiment would be nice.Lastly, there are NO solutions.Anywhere.No odds, or selected solutions in the back, no solutions manual, nothing.Without any reference to check your solutions against, you feel like you're flying blind and without conformation that you did something right or wrong, it ultimately makes to more difficult to learn the material.I would not recommend this text.

I'm a grad student in chemistry, and I adore this text. Assuming you have a basic calculus and thermo background, this is all one needs as a reference to accessing more advanced / specialized texts. Even at that, the first few chapters provide a useful refresher on vector calculus and chemical potentials, etc, though I wouldn't rely on this text as your soul source to learn about those more fundamental topics.

This book is a triumph of technical writing. Ken Dill possesses an extraordinary ability to distill complex technical concepts down to the cogent bits necessary to understand the physics of the situation.The maxim, "make it as simple as possible, but not simpler" definitely applies here.The only major challenge with this book is that a reader may come away with a notion of inflated comprehension.This is not a fault...just a byproduct of the big contrast between the clarity of the Dill (and Bromberg) text and the other, technically obfuscated, textbooks and articles in the field.

Easily the best (introductory) textbook on statistical physics that I have encountered, and the only one that I can heartily recommend to a student or non-specialist. ... Read more
