Editorial Review

Product Description
The second edition retains all the beauty of the first, and it serves as an editorial model -- a guide that shows us how serious authors prepare a new version of a serious book.

The first edition was the work of seven authors, all of them outstanding scientists [note 2]. For the second edition, the team of authors has been expanded to include a science writer, Karen Hopkin, whose main responsibility (the Preface tells us) has been "to make the book clear, accessible, and fun to read."

As in the earlier edition, there is a digest of "Essential Concepts" near the end of each chapter, and the illustrations are grouped into panels that actually explain principles, structures, procedures and experiments, rather than just providing pretty distractions. Some of the material has been reordered, the coverage has been broadened to include some new findings and new methods, there is more emphasis on genetics, and there is an expanded, improved complement of questions that make students take time to think, to realize that a question often has more than one valid answer, and to recognize that alternative perspectives are available in almost any situation. All of these changes are welcome.

...There are 21 "How We Know" articles -- one in every chapter -- providing information about metabolic pathways, protein structures, replication, the genetic code, mitosis, and cancer, among other topics. These articles… [are] very important innovations....Each copy of the new edition is accompanied by a CD-ROM, and the CD-ROM is not a mere gimmick or toy. It is a valuable adjunct to the textbook, and it has two important functions. First, it carries the literature references for each chapter in the book. (The references don't appear in the book itself.) Second, the CD-ROM provides interactive illustrations, typically with voice-over narrations, that demonstrate such things as the structures of molecules, the movement of cells, and the processes of replication, translation and cell division.

What makes for a great science education is not the amassing of facts but the understanding of concepts, processes and syntheses, and the realization that all our information about nature must be subject to testing and revision. That is the kind of educational experience that students can acquire from the second edition of Essential Cell Biology.

I recommend this new edition for use in advanced high-school courses aimed at students who already have had a course in chemistry and a solid introductory course in biology. This fine book also belongs in the library of any high school that offers serious instruction in science. Teachers and librarians who did not get the first edition should look at this second edition pronto.

Product Description
This hugely influential book, published in 1966 as a 60th birthday tribute to Max Delbruck, is now republished as The Centennial Edition. On first publication, the book was hailed as ''[introducing] into the literature of science, for the first time, a self conscious historical element in which the participants in scientific discovery engage in writing their own chronicle. As such, it is an important document in the history of biology... '' (Journal of History of Biology). And in another review it was described as ''required reading for every student of experimental biology...[who] will sense the smell and rattle of the laboratory'' (Bioscience). The book was a formative influence on many of today's leading scientists. Product Description
The first two editions of this manual have been mainstays of molecular biology for nearly twenty years, with an unrivalled reputation for reliability, accuracy, and clarity. In this new edition, authors Joe Sambrook and David Russell have completely updated the book, revising every protocol and adding a mass of new material, to broaden its scope and maintain its unbeatable value for studies in genetics, molecular cell biology, developmental biology, microbiology, neuroscience, and immunology. Handsomely redesigned and presented in new bindings of proven durability, this three-volume work is essential for everyone using todays biomolecular techniques. The opening chapters describe essential techniques, some well-established, some new, that are used every day in the best laboratories for isolating, analyzing and cloning DNA molecules, both large and small. These are followed by chapters on cDNA cloning and exon trapping, amplification of DNA, generation and use of nucleic acid probes, mutagenesis, and DNA sequencing. The concluding chapters deal with methods to screen expression libraries, express cloned genes in both prokaryotes and eukaryotic cells, analyze transcripts and proteins, and detect protein-protein interactions. The Appendix is a compendium of reagents, vectors, media, technical suppliers, kits, electronic resources and other essential information. Product Description
In Silico introduces Maya programming into one of the most fascinating application areas of 3D graphics: biological visualization. In five building-block tutorials, this book prepares animators to work with visualization problems in cell biology. The book assumes no deep knowledge of cell biology nor 3D graphics programming. An accompanying DVD-ROM includes code derived from the tutorials, the working Maya computer files, and sample animated movies. The interior of the book contains generous Maya screen captures, tables, and flowcharts to compliment the instruction and tutorials. Full 4 color illustrations rendered from the authors' working files illustrate the capacity to produce striking pictures from the rendered models being created. Throughout the text, key words are set in bold type and subsequently defined in a glossary. Page margin tips and tricks compliment the adjacent copy, and icons direct the reader to specific references within the Maya Help library. The visualizations in the book are stunning examples of the state of the art.

Customer Reviews (2)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
Firstly, let's talk about the structure of the book. This book is broken into three sections:

PART 1 is an introduction to the evolution of computing and how CG has been used for medical simulations and scientific visualizations. It contains three chapters that discuss how hardware and software are progressing over the years in respect of technology. So, this first part of the book is a bit overwhelming on theory. Those who are familiar with CG concepts and terms might see interesting to skip this part.

PART 2 is a Maya crash course. Well, not so "crash" if you consider this is a ten chapters walk. It goes from Maya Interface through Dynamics ending up with two great MEL scripting chapters. Maya users may want to skip this part. However, I consider the two chapters on MEL scripting valuable even for those who are already Maya/MEL users.

PART 3 is the heart of the book. However, it is a rock-solid one. This part contains five project-based chapters. If you are an experienced Maya and MEL user, so you are at one of the most interesting playgrounds you could be. If you are not experienced with Maya/MEL, I suggest you to go back to PART 2 and consider reading it. These five projects/tutorials will make you dive deep into the world of MEL scripting. And believe me: it's rewarding.

This is not a book for the casual 3D modeler and animator. This one is for those really interested in how Maya and MEL can be used to generate 3D animations and simulations for the biology and medical fields. Almost every picture inside this book is related with biomedical applications.

Those looking for learning Maya, this book really brings a pretty descent foundation course on this software. Those looking for learning MEL, this book is a must buy. Just please keep in mind that every example and exercise is targeted to cell biology and its related fields.

Best regards,
Chris.

3-0 out of 5 stars this book will get you thinking
Overall I think this book is a decent addition to anyone looking at science visualization if you have a good knowledge of Maya already.
The book is broken into two sections. The first half of the book is really just an intro to maya. If you need this info, then the second half will completely blow you out of the water. I found the second half to be fairly engaging- it is really an exercise in MEL scripting - and a good one.
I think the book could give a more general overview of sci-viz, and not get into specifics so much.
This book is not for the casual Maya user. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rockefeller's Vision
The information in this book is astonishing. A summary can only sell the book short, but here goes it.The Rockefeller family was hated for lack of business ethics, so they hired a PR man to improve their image. He recommended they give to a worthy cause like improving the health of people or something like that. What they did was form a committee to research what it would take to reform the practices of western medicine. It was determined that buying a relatively small number of the largest medical institutions and controlling what was taught to medical students, they could control how medicine was practiced in America.Well he bought up some medical schools, closed the rest, and effectively removed nutrition, and holistic and herbal medicine from the curriculum, and replaced it with a doctrine of pharmaceuticals and surgery.Of course he owned major shares in the pharmaceutical producing companies and could only profit from this.So instead of doing something that would improve their family image, they improved their family image and began to prey on the ill. I hung on every word in this book and the information it contains is invaluable.I wish everyone could read it.

I'd also like to make a side point.Successful industries create their market, so what do you do if you need to sell drugs to make a profit? You create sick people. How do you do that? You promote unhealthful practices, cure nothing, and make sure doctors only treat symptoms. You also lobby to make it mandatory for children to take vaccines containing aluminum, mercury, cancer causing viruses, foreign DNA, etc., etc. resulting in chronic disease and allergies. That's how, and that is just for starters.Believe it or not, that is what was and is being done to us, and then some.Kind of makes you sick, doesn't it? ... Product Description

Edited by renowned protein scientist and bestselling author Roger L. Lundblad, with the assistance of Fiona M. Macdonald of CRC Press, this fourth edition of the Handbook of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology represents a dramatic revision — the first in two decades — of one of biochemistry's most referenced works. This edition gathers a wealth of information not easily obtained, including information not found on the web.

Offering a molecular perspective not available 20 years ago, it provides physical and chemical data on proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and carbohydrates. Presented in an organized, concise, and simple-to-use format, this popular reference allows quick access to the most frequently used data. Covering a wide range of topics, from classical biochemistry to proteomics and genomics, it also details the properties of commonly used biochemicals, laboratory solvents, and reagents.

Just a small sampling of the wealth of information found inside the handbook:

  • Buffers and buffer solutions
  • Heat capacities and combustion levels
  • Reagents for the chemical modification of proteins
  • Comprehensive classification system for lipids
  • Biological characteristics of vitamins
  • A huge variety of UV data
  • Recommendations for nomenclature and tables in biochemical thermodynamics
  • Guidelines for NMR measurements for determination of high and low pka values
  • Viscosity and density tables
  • Chemical and physical properties of various commercial plastics
  • Generic source-based nomenclature for polymers
  • Therapeutic enzymes
