Product Description
The new edition of a classic reference incorporating the latest findings and discoveries

The Third Edition of this classic reference provides readers with concise, up-to-the-moment coverage of the role of microorganisms in water and wastewater treatment. By providing a solid foundation in microbiology, microbial growth, metabolism, and nutrient cycling, the text gives readers the tools they need to make critical decisions that affect public health, as well as the practical aspects of treatment, disinfection, water distribution, bioremediation, and water and wastewater reuse.

The publication begins a discussion of microbiology principles, followed by a discussion of public health issues and concerns. Next, the core of the text is dedicated to a thorough examination of wastewater and drinking water treatment, biosolids, pollution-control biotechnology, and drinking water distribution. The remainder of the text discusses toxicity testing in wastewater treatment plants, and the public health aspects of wastewater disposal and reuse.

The many advances in wastewater and drinking water microbiology have all been thoroughly integrated into the publication, including:

* A new chapter on bioterrorism and drinking water safety
* The latest developments in biofilm microbial ecology and biofilm impact on drinking water quality
* New, state-of-the-art detection techniques
* Expanded and revised treatment of toxicity testing, including new testing methods and studies on endocrine disrupters in wastewater
* Alternatives to conventional wastewater treatment

New problem sets, which test readers' knowledge, as well as a list of Internet resources have been added to each chapter. In addition, the publication's extensive references have been thoroughly revised for readers who would like to learn more about the latest findings and discoveries on specialized topics. Finally, the color plate section has been expanded and contains many new illustrations and tables.

An authoritative guide for all researchers, administrators, and engineers in the field of microbiology, Wastewater Microbiology, Third Edition is also a valuable reference for civil and environmental engineers, public health officials, and students involved in environmental engineering and science. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
The field of microbiology has developed considerably in the last 20 years, building exponentially on its own discoveries and growing to encompass many other disciplines. Unfortunately, the literature in the field tends to be either encyclopedic in scope or presented as a textbook and oriented for the student. Finding its niche between these two poles, the second edition of the bestselling Practical Handbook of Microbiology provides in-depth chapters on all aspects of the field, from classical microbiology to genomics, in an easily accessible volume.

Reflecting the sweeping changes in microbiology, yet retaining the popular format of the original, this second edition includes many chapter rewrites and more than 20 new or expanded chapters.

New in the second edition:

·         Five new chapters in Part I: Identification of Gram-Positive Bacteria, Identification of Gram-Negative Bacteria, Plaque Assays, Phage Display, and Epidemiological Methods

·         15 new chapters in Part II, including Mycobacteria, Legionella, Hemophillus, Listeria, Campylobacter, Helicobacter, Yersinia, Bordetella, Other Zoonotic Bacteria, Other Anaerobic Bacteria, Archae, Biofilms, Bacteriophage, Parasites, and more

·         An entirely new survey table of selected eubacteria

·         Introduction to Yeasts and Introduction to Animal Virology, two topics covered only briefly in the first edition, are now full length chapters

·         Various brief taxonomy chapters are now complete chapters with descriptions of genus and species

  • An in depth explanation of all ofthe currently available diagnostic procedures used in the microbiologylaboratory
  • Providing basic knowledge and practical information on working with microorganisms, Practical Handbook of Microbiology, Second Edition is designed to facilitate highly specialized working microbiologists, as well as those who simply use microbiology as an adjunct to their own discipline, in finding relevant information easily, in a clear and concise single volume. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars All you need for USMLE STEP 1 Microbio and Immuno
Very concise presentation, easy to read and understandable. The questions in the back are KEY- do these and you will rock this section of the boards. The best bang for your buck. Look no further.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must buy for USLME
This book is good for the USLME microbiology portion. It gives essential detail of high-yield items. However, I also used:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
    (ISBN: 0971999635)
The second book I got on Amazon.com also.I recommend the first book as a great summary to getting to the essential details of microbiology.I advise getting the second book to help prepare for the type of questions to know for the USLME.

4-0 out of 5 stars Complete Medical Microbiology Review Book..
'Medical Microbiology and Immunology: Examination and Board review' is more than a good book. The organization and contents of the book are great. Summaries of the most important microorganisms at the end of each section of the book make it excellent for quick reviewing what one has just read. Also, the book includes unique chapters like normal flora, laboratory diagnosis, and vaccines which are really helpful. The immunology section extensively provide a solit understanding of the immune mechanisms, using illustrative figures and mnemonics. Moreover, the MCQs at the end of the book, along with the clinical cases, emphasize on the important areas in medical microbiology.

One more thing I have to complement is the use of bold font in the book; this made skimming chapters quickly before a final microbiology exam a 'stressless' event, and gave confidence.

To be neutral in my review, the book lacks a good mycology section (You need another book for mycology).

    5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty time-saving
No time to type (because of preparin' the board), so only one opinion. GGGOOOOOODDDDD!!

The third edition of this extremely successful book gives an in-depth coverage of all aspects of brewing microbiology. It includes a new introductory chapter which describes the contribution of microbiology to modern brewing practice and sets the scene for the following, more specialized chapters. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for a specific audience.
I am an avid homebrewer. I have been brewing all-grain for around six years. I am fascinated by the science behind the art. This book was not for me. Then why did I give it 5 stars? It is really, really comprehensive on spoilage bacteria and fungus, genetics etc that I am positive anyone in the industry that works with storing grain, consulting for breweries, lab work concerning beer production packaging etc will really get a lot out of this book. I did actually enjoy many parts of it but much of it cites hundreds of other papers that I do not have access too so there isn't anyway I could follow up if I wanted to. The genetics material was also well above my current level of understanding.

I have many titles on my book shelf. This is a welcome edition to that group but as a recommendation for homebrewers looking for information and methods to improving your home production, this book is further down the line than many others available. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars COVERED ALL THE LAB FUNDAMENTALS
This "Microbiology Laboratory Fundamentals and Applications" is not a very big volume, but it left no question unanswered as regards it scope. From bacteriology to immunology, mycology to virology; George Wistreich provided valuble practical guides here.
Apart from shedding light on general lab techniques, this practical-oriented book directs its reader on how to isolate, culture, and identify various species of micro-organisms. It analyzed the basics of microscopy, staining methods, preparation of culture media, optimal incubation, and many others.
Designed for the inexperienced, this book used simple directives in all of its chapters. Most microbiology and medical lab science students will value its guidance. Its focus is medical laboratory; yet, it did not fail to browse many techniques which are of industrial importance.
This book will be of great benefit to any student who relies on it. Meanwhile, its rather high price force me to add that there are some cheaper alternatives in the market. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Gets it done, but very frustrating
This book is filled with mistakes.I was successful on the NBME Micro/immuno shelf exam, but it was very frustrating. The book leaves a lot of bad explanations just hanging.Pre test is an effective product and I will use them again, but this is the worst one I've used.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good bacteriology section, poor virology section
It was pretty obvious to me that those two sections were written by different people.Bacteriology section explains the correct answer and most of the time also explains why the incorrect answers are incorrect. However, virology section sometimes doesn't even address the correct answer or the incorrect answer. The questions in virology section are not as integrative or patient case oriented as the bacteriology section is.I enjoyed going through the bacteria section while virus section was a waste of time.
