Product Description
Maintaining the high standard set by the previous bestselling editions, Fundamental Food Microbiology, Fourth Edition presents the most up-to-date information in this rapidly growing and highly dynamic field. Revised and expanded to reflect recent advances, this edition broadens coverage of foodborne diseases to include many new and emerging pathogens, as well as descriptions of the mechanism of pathogenesis. An entirely new chapter on detection methods appears with evaluations of advanced rapid detection techniques using biosensors and nanotechnology. With the inclusion of many more easy-to-follow figures and illustrations, this text provides a comprehensive introductory source for undergraduates, as well as a valuable reference for graduate level and working professionals in food microbiology or food safety.

Each chapter within the text’s seven sections contains an introduction as well as a conclusion, references, and questions. Beginning with the history and development of the field, Part I discusses the characteristics and sources of predominant food microorgasnisms and their significance. Part II introduces microbial foodborne diseases, their growth and influencing factors, metabolism, and sporulation. The third Part explains the beneficial uses of microorganisms in starter cultures, biopreservation, bioprocessing, and probiotics.

Part IV deals with food spoilage and methods of detection, followed by a discussion in Part V of foodborne pathogens associated with intoxication, infections, and toxicoinfections. Part VI reviews control methods with chapters on control of microbial access and removal by heat, organic acids, physical means, and combinations of methods. The final section is an in-depth look at advanced and traditional methods of microbial detection and food safety. Four appendices provide additional details on food equipment and surfaces, predictive modeling, regulatory agencies, and hazard analysis critical control points. ... Read more

I needed this Lab book for my Micro class, so when I found it on Amazon I was super excited...The description on it clearly stated that it was "LIKE NEW," and that there were no markings in the Lab Book....Yeah Right. I loved the fact that the delivery was pronto, but once I recieved and opened the Lab Book, to my surprise...MOST OF THE LAB PRACTICALS inside were already done by a previous student!!...Needless to say, I wasn't very thrilled!!!!!!!

Product Description
An indispensable undergraduate textbook that covers the critical topic of food microbiology, the second edition of "Food Microbiology: An Introduction" offers authoritative coverage as well as an appealing design for today's instructors and students. This impressive second edition by Thomas Montville and Karl Matthews builds upon the earlier edition's success covering the complex field of food microbiology while also motivating students to venture beyond memorization to a broader understanding of the concepts. Following up on the critical success of the first edition, this textbook presents a classroom-friendly adaptation that has been student tested for level and depth of coverage. This new edition offers a straightforward approach to learning the core principles without sacrificing depth, clarity, or rigor. It introduces the genetics and mechanisms important to specific issues in food microbiology. This textbook encourages today's students to acquire the understanding and skills necessary for practicing food safety in the future. The textbook has been completely updated based on student input and on new discoveries in food microbiology.Organized into five major sections, which can be taught in any order, this new edition adds important new details, including expanded coverage of food fermentations. Additionally, this student-friendly textbook employs attractive instructive material such as text boxes, case studies, chapter summaries, questions for critical thought, and a glossary. The first section, Basics of Food Microbiology, cements foundational material, while the next four sections detail specific food-borne organisms and strategies for controlling them. Descriptions of outbreaks of food-related infections inject life into each pathogen covered. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction book to Food Microbiology
As a practicing food microbiologist for the last six years, I find this book by Montville and Matthews very helpful when dealing with basic inquiries on food microbiology. It is a good book to discuss with lab assistants and those who have little knowledge of what food microbiology is all about especially in the food processing industry where a lot of supervisors and managers do not have comprehensive understanding of food microbiology.

This book is a clear, concise summary of work in the general field of microalgae through about 1994.As such, it is required reading for all those looking to use algae for biofuels or specialty nutrients, etc.Don't look for the latest information; that's not the purpose of this volume. It does however give a very thorough and solid base from which to build. The level of writing is appropriate for advanced undergraduates and above; unlike some authors, Becker has a sense of humor that is both surprising and delightful to find in a scientific text. For me, a non-biologist, this was exactly what I needed in my position as an officer of an algae-based biofuel company. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars SHERRIS IS MORE THAN JUST AN INTRODUCTORY TEXT, BUT....
Concise and clinically relevant, Sherris Medical Microbiology is more than just an introductory text. It harbours abundant information that will interest anyone with a career in healthcare. The book paid total tribute to all aspects of pathogenic bacteriology, mycology, virology, parasitology, and immunology. Simple and clear explanations were used throughout.
However, at this level, one would be disappointed that Sherris has lost touch with being up-to-date. As a result, the excellent (4th edition of) Medical Microbiology by Murray, et al, has relegated Sherris' efforts to that of a second fiddle. It offers a better value for money; and boasts of the most up-to-date information currently on sale.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book first!
I've tried many other books on microbiology and on infectious diseases which cover bacteria and virology. This book by far exceeds those. It is taught in a clear manner for the beginner student. But this book has awealth of information for more advanced students to learn from. The bookcomes complete with annoted notes on the sides of the pages, giving youbasic notes on what the paragraph is discusses, excellent for quickreviewing! This is by far the best microbiology book I have encounteredwhen faced with exactly what I want to learn about - bacteriology, virology, parasitiology and concepts of immunology. It also covers thestrains of viruses and bacteria - as well as other parasites that can bringabout [infectious] disease. I've read other books of this type which costalmost double this book and haven't gotten anything close to what can bedelivered from this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone with aninterest of bacteriology, virology or infectious diseases. Whether you're astudent of just someone with an interest in learning more about thesesubjects.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb introductory text for medical students.
This third edition of Sherris Medical Microbiology serves a badly needed role in basic science medical education. The vast array of prokaryotic and eukaryotic infecting organisms can be baffling to the novice practitioner, and this text serves as agood foundation on which to build more specialized insight. For a quick list of strong and weak points, scroll to the end of the review.

The first sevenchapters discuss the biology of the prokaryotic cell and the virus, with an obvious focus on areas of cell structure and viral physiology that are affected by antibiotic and antiviral therapies.Biochemists will find this area thin, but it is not intended to provide specific, in-depth information of the subjects.

The following three chapters discuss host-parasite relationships, and this area is one of the text's true strong points. The dynamics of infection are the meat of the forces that govern whether an organism will overpower its host or be destroyed. The text does a strong job of laying out the fundamental mechanisms of bacterial colonization and host reponse.

Chapters eleven through fourteen cover spread and control of infection, and here the book could be stronger. There are excellent discussions of the mechanisms of antimicrobial chemistry, and of host resistance, but little to guide a novice with the most important aspect of antimicrobial therapy: how to select an agent. There are really only two tables of suggested regimens, which although they could be memorized, are no better than, say, a copy of Sanford in the coat pocket. What medical students need most is an understanding of how to pick an agent, and there just isn't enough here to assist a student in how to prioritize one's options.

Forty-four chapters of bug-by-bug descriptions of all clinically signifiacnt pathogens follow. These discussions are all reasonably thorough and complete, although occasional tidbits are missing, such as whether rabies infects rodents or not, and some specific bacterium-disease relationships are omitted (e.g. Chromobacter violaceum and chronic granulomatous disease).

The book's other real strength and utility to medical students lies in the final twenty-three chapters, which discuss syndromes of infcetion. Here the studnet can learn what a cellulitis or a pneumonia really is, from a microbial point of view. Unfortunately, again, antibiotic choices are not well laid out for the reader.

In short, this is an excellent text for medical students, but not for house officers. The basic science is well described, but practical guidelines are scanty.

Strengths:
1. Strong discussion of host-parasite relationships, and infectious control.
2. Useful discussion of disease syndromes.
3. large, easy-to-read pages, with margin notes to quickly locate material of interest.

Weaknesses:
1. Weak on practical matters, such as antibiotic selection

Suggestions for next edition:

Add a section on antibiotic selection, and empiric approach to infection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars schaum's microbiology study guide
taking online courses, this book helped with more information and quizzes at the end of each chapter.

4-0 out of 5 stars The only study guide you'll need for microbiology
This book was excellent for my undergraduate microbiology class needed for a nursing program. It was by far the best study guide I found and really helped to summarize the information in an easy to understand manner before I tackled the reading in my textbook. It was also a great review for the exams and had lots of questions to test yourself on your understanding of the material. This book really helped make my study time more efficient and I did get an A in my class. There are some mistakes in the book, which is why I didn't give it 5 stars.I also used Microbiology Study Guide by Dr. Leonardi, which is excellent, but if you can only buy one study guide, this is definitely the book to buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good review for microbiology
This book covers a lot of subject area for microbiology. This is a very good reference book. I used this book for my undergraduate microbiology class along with the following:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
ISBN: 0971999635
These 2 books helped me to get an "A" in my class. The second book which I also got on amazon.com is so specific to the type of questions I saw on my test.I was recommended the microbiology study guide by a friend in med school who used it for his USLME exam and found it quite helpful. ... Product Description
The pace of progress in fermentation microbiology and biotechnology is fast and furious, with new applications being implemented that are resulting in a spectrum of new products, from renewable energy to solvents and pharmaceuticals

Fermentation Microbiology and Biotechnology, Second Edition builds on the foundation of the original seminal work, extending its reach to reflect the multidisciplinary and expansive nature of fermentation research and advancements. While retaining valuable information from the previous edition including a brief history of the industry, as well as an overview of instrumentation and fermentor design, fermentation kinetics, and flux control analysis, the second edition addresses numerous topics that have risen to prominence in the past few years.

New chapters explore the diverse array of microbial biosynthetic pathways currently used by the fermentation and pharmaceutical industries for the production of primary and secondary metabolites such as amino acids, vitamins, antibiotics, immunosuppressants, and anti-tumor agents. The authors also examine recent advances in enzyme and co-factor engineering and cell immobilization with respect to both novel drug development and improved yields from microbial processes.

Beyond pharmaceuticals, this volume considers the emerging role of fermentation in the conversion of renewable resources to fine chemicals, as well as its potential use in converting lignocellulosic waste to ethanol. In addition, readers will also discover new chapters devoted to discussions of industrial issues such as modeling and sensor technology, as well as supervision and control in the fermentation process.

The text is packed with examples and case studies from the industry, carefully chosen to illuminate and reinforce principles and methodology discussed in the chapters. Organized and written in a concise and lucid manner that requires only a general background in microbiology, this volume meets the needs ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad buy...
Everyone's learning is different... with that said... these deja series aren't bad as long as their not used for primary study. Their great for final review's before your exam to help boost your confidence and help you remember stuff you might have forgotten or couldn't remember. For this book, i didn't really have time to use the immunology section much b/c I was pressed for time, but i found the microbiology section useful. Not a bad buy at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not particularly memorable
I got this book to review for the Microbiology & Immunology shelf exam.I like the 2-column format of questions and answers in this book, but eventually, it got rather dense and did not keep my attention.

3-0 out of 5 stars For review right before test ONLY!
This product does have a lot of information and is very useful... if you use it right before the test, to refresh your memory and hit the key concepts you might have forgotten. If you are studying in general and do not know the material yet, don't buy this book.It is in a two column, all questions and answers.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE for boards!!!!!
This book was by far the best micro review I had for boards! It gave me all the information I needed without meaningless minutia and was VERY high-yield for boards. I used it for my micro class during the year and it really helped, especially with group studying. The question-answer format is a great way to test yourself before exams and I found it to be a comprehensive review before I took boards. I recommend it to every med student looking for a thorough review for micro. ... Read more
